Meeting a friend passing through the city

DIALOGUE

Marc: Tiens ! Thomas ? C’est bien toi ?
Thomas: Marc ! Ça alors ! Quelle surprise ! Qu’est-ce que tu fais dans le coin ?
Marc: Ben, j’habite toujours ici, moi !
Tu as dit que ton train était à quelle heure ?
Marc: Ouais, je me souviens !
Thomas: Chouette ! Il faudra que je l’appelle. Bon, alors ce café ?
Marc: On y va !
Thomas: Tu as raison… Tu peux regarder sur ton portable ? TGV Lyon-Paris, aujourd’hui…
Marc: Attends… Ah ! J’en vois un à 17h42 et un autre à… Oh là là ! Le suivant n’est qu’à 19h30 !
Thomas: Quoi ? Fais voir !
Marc: Si, dix minutes à pied maximum. Allez, finis ton café tranquillement. On a encore trois quarts d’heure.
Marc: Camille !
Marc: Promis ! Allez, en route !

DIALOGUE

Marc: Hey! Thomas? Is that you?
Thomas: Marc! Well, I’ll be! What a surprise! What are you doing around here?
Marc: Well, I still live here! I should be the one asking you that. Aren’t you supposed to be in Marseille?
Thomas: Yeah, yeah, but I’m just passing through. I have to catch the TGV to Paris in… uh… two hours, I think. It’s a work thing, you know.
Marc: Oh really? Work in Paris? Are you changing companies or what?
Thomas: No, no, it’s just training. Three days, nothing more. Wow, it’s been ages since we last saw each other!
Marc: Yeah, since your farewell party last year! How’s it going down South? Are you enjoying it there?
Thomas: It’s great! The sun, the sea… Well, work is a bit stressful but the vibe makes up for it. And you? Still at Renault?
Marc: Still, but I’ve changed departments. I moved into marketing. It’s more interesting than before. Listen, we’re not going to just stand here! Do you have time to grab a coffee?
Thomas: Good idea! But wait… Damn, what time is it? I left my suitcase at the station’s left-luggage office.
Marc: It’s 3:30 PM. What time did you say your train was?
Thomas: Uh… 5:40 PM, I think. Or 5:50 PM… Darn, I can’t remember exactly.
Marc: Are you kidding? You don’t even know what time your train leaves?
Thomas: Well, yes, but I have the reservation on my phone and… oh no! The battery’s dead. Great!
Marc: Come on, let’s go to the café across the street and we’ll check on my phone. Anyway, you’ve got plenty of time.
Thomas: Okay, but not too long then. You know how I am with trains!
Marc: Yeah, I remember! Always an hour early! So, tell me everything. You’re still dating… what was her name again?
Thomas: Sophie? No, it’s been over for three months. We hardly ever saw each other because of the distance and all…
Marc: Ah, too bad. She seemed nice. So, what about the friends over there?
Thomas: I’ve met people at work and joined a tennis club. I’m doing fine; I’m not bored. And you? Any news about the others?
Marc: Julie got married to her Belgian boyfriend. Pierre had a kid. Oh, and guess what? Stéphane started his own business!
Thomas: Seriously? What kind of business?
Marc: IT, as usual. He’s developing mobile apps. It’s doing pretty well, according to him.
Thomas: Great! I’ll have to call him. So, what about that coffee?
Marc: Let’s go! Waiter! Two espressos, please!
Thomas: Tell me, do you still play football on Sundays?
Marc: No, I stopped. I injured my knee last winter. Now I go swimming.
Thomas: Too bad, I was hoping we could play a match when I came back…
Marc: Are you planning to come back to Lyon?
Thomas: Maybe for Christmas, we’ll see. My parents keep nagging me to come more often.
Marc: Hey, by the way! Check your train time now, I’m worried.
Thomas: You’re right… Can you check on your phone? TGV Lyon-Paris, today…
Marc: Wait… Ah! I see one at 17:42 and another at… Oh dear! The next one isn’t until 19:30!
Thomas: What? Let me see! Oh, it’s 17:42, phew! But I have to go then. The station isn’t nearby.
Marc: Yes, a ten-minute walk at most. Come on, finish your coffee in peace. We’ve still got three quarters of an hour.
Thomas: OK, but after that we’re leaving straight away, right? So your girlfriend, Clara – that’s her, right?
Marc: Camille! No, we broke up two months ago. I’m a hardened bachelor now!
Thomas: Well, we’re even then! Right, I really have to go now.
Marc: All right, I’ll walk you to the station. It’s been a pleasure seeing you again, old friend!
Thomas: Me too! We’ll keep in touch this time, I promise!
Marc: Promise! Come on, let’s go!
