Lack of regularity – how to discipline yourself?

Thomas : Ah bon ?
Léa : Ah là là, tu me fais un peu peur !
Léa : Bon, d’accord, je me lance ! Merci Thomas, tu me donnes vraiment envie de m’y remettre sérieusement.
Thomas : De rien !
*rires*
Léa : Marché conclu ! *rires* Allez, à mercredi alors !

Léa, a master’s student, meets her friend Thomas at the university café. She confides in him about her difficulties maintaining a steady routine in learning Spanish. Thomas, who already speaks three foreign languages, is going to give her his advice on developing better discipline.
DIALOGUE
Léa : Hi Thomas! It’s a good thing I ran into you… I have a little problem with my Spanish classes.
Thomas : Oh really? What’s going on? Are you having trouble with grammar?
Léa : No, it’s not that… Well, yes, a little, but above all I can’t manage to be consistent. I tend to do everything at the last minute.
Thomas : Ah, the infamous problem of procrastination! Well, I had that trouble at first with German too.
Léa : Really? Yet you seem to be doing so well with languages! You speak English, German and Italian fluently, don’t you?
Thomas : Yes, but believe me, it hasn’t always been easy. At first, I used to study for three hours straight on Sunday evenings, and then nothing for a week.
Léa : Exactly! That’s exactly what I do! And then I feel guilty, of course…
Thomas : The trick is, it’s better to do fifteen minutes a day than three hours at once. Your brain picks things up much better that way.
Léa : Mmm… Easier said than done! But how do you manage not to forget? Me, between classes, my part-time job, studying…
Thomas : Uh… Do you use reminder apps on your phone?
Léa : I’ve tried, but after three days I completely ignore them!
Thomas : Ah, I see the problem! You need to find a fixed time in your day. For me, it’s on the subway, morning and evening.
Léa : On the subway? But there’s too much noise, too many people… How do you concentrate?
Thomas : Actually, that’s perfect for listening! I’ve downloaded podcasts in German and Italian. Even if I don’t understand everything, it trains my ear.
Léa : Oh, that’s a clever idea! I always waste my time scrolling through Instagram on public transport…
Thomas : There you go! Swap Instagram for a Spanish app, and presto-problem solved!
Léa : Hmm… And what about motivation? Because sometimes I really feel like I’m not making any progress.
Thomas : Ah, that’s the catch! You need to set realistic goals. What level do you want to reach by the end of the year?
Léa : Well… I’d like to be able to watch Spanish series without subtitles.
Thomas : Okay, but that’s still a bit vague as a goal. Why don’t you start with series with Spanish subtitles?
Léa : Ah yes, good idea! But, uh… I have to admit I already have trouble keeping up with my classes, so on top of that, watching series…
Thomas : No, no – you replace a French series with a Spanish one! You don’t add anything, you substitute.
Léa : Ah, when you put it that way… It’s true that I watch at least an hour of series every night.
Thomas : Exactly! And you know what? We could schedule a weekly check-in to review your progress.
Léa : Seriously? You’d do that?
Thomas : Of course! That would help me too, because I’m actually starting Chinese next month and I’m a little scared…
Léa : Chinese? Wow – you’re really brave! I’m already struggling with Spanish…
Thomas : Hey, don’t sell yourself short! Spanish is already a big challenge. And we’ll help each other.
Léa : That’s great! We could meet right here, at the café, every Wednesday?
Thomas : Perfect! But watch out, you’ll have to come with proof of your efforts, okay!
Léa : Uh… what kind of proof?
Thomas : Well, the number of episodes watched, the new words learned, the exercises done… We’re going to create a sort of logbook!
Léa : Oh my, you’re kind of scaring me! I feel like you’re going to be stricter than my teachers!
Thomas : No, come on! It’s just to help you keep up the pace. And besides, we can plan a little reward when you reach your goals.
Léa : A reward? Like what?
Thomas : We could go to that little Spanish restaurant near the university? That way, you can practice in a real-life situation!
Léa : Oh my… Speaking Spanish with real native speakers… I get cold sweats just thinking about it!
Thomas : Come on, don’t worry! In a few months, you’ll see, it’ll be child’s play!
Léa : Okay, all right, I’ll go for it! Thanks, Thomas, you’re really making me want to get back to it seriously.
Thomas : You’re welcome! So, shall we say next Wednesday, same time?
Léa : Got it! And… uh… what if I haven’t done anything all week?
Thomas : Well… you buy me a coffee! *laughs*
Léa : Deal! *laughs* Alright, see you on Wednesday then!
