Home DIY and Safety – A Dispute About Risk

Sophie : Trois fois rien ?
Sophie : Justement ! Tu n’as plus vingt ans, Paul.
Paul : Ben voyons ! Maintenant, on va me faire un cours d’architecture ? J’ai l’œil, moi !
Sophie : Paul, sois raisonnable !
Paul : Michel ? Il est encore plus maladroit que moi ! Non non, je préfère me débrouiller seul.
Tiens, regarde… *commence à monter*
Sophie : Paul ! Descends immédiatement ! Tu n’as même pas mis ton casque !
Paul : Un casque ? Pour bricoler chez moi ? Tu rigoles !
Vous allez me lâcher, oui ? Je sais ce que je fais !
Sophie : *énervée* Non mais tu t’entends ? Monsieur sait tout ! Et si tu te tues, qu’est-ce qu’on devient, nous ?
Paul : *redescendant* Ah ben bravo ! Maintenant je vais me tuer !
Paul : Un professionnel ? Tu as vu les tarifs ?
On verra bien.
Sophie : Ah ! Enfin un peu de bon sens ! Et promets-moi de ne rien toucher d’ici là.
Paul : Ouais, ouais… promis.
Sophie : *souriant* Allez, viens bougon !
Paul : Ah tiens ? Ben dans ce cas, ça m’intéresse ! On peut toujours voir…
Sophie : Parfait ! Affaire conclue alors. Plus de bricolage dangereux !

Paul decides to repair the attic roof structure himself over the weekend, but his wife Sophie worries about the risks he is taking. Their son Thomas, an architecture student, tries to act as mediator in this family dispute, which quickly escalates.

DIALOGUE

Paul: Right, I’ve got everything I need to repair this beam. Hammer, saw, screws… That should do it!
Sophie: Paul, are you sure it’s a good idea? That ladder is at least fifteen years old, and…
Paul: Listen, darling, I’ve been doing DIY my whole life, you know! No need to call in a tradesman for something so minor.
Sophie : No big deal? Paul, you’re going to climb up four metres! What if you fall?
Paul : Oh, come on, I’m not going to fall! You always make everything into a drama. Besides, look, I’ve put on my safety boots.
Thomas : Dad, mum might be right. In class, the teacher told us that most accidents…
Paul : Oh no! Not you too! Listen, son, before you were born I’d already fixed up three houses!
Sophie : Exactly! You’re not twenty anymore, Paul. Last year you hurt your back just moving the wardrobe!
Paul : Pfff… It was different. And anyway, it’s just a few nails to hammer in.
Sophie : A few nails? Are you kidding? That beam holds up the entire roof! If you repair it badly…
Thomas : Uh, Dad, I took a look at the plans. That beam is really important structurally.
Paul : Oh come on! Now you’re going to give me a lecture on architecture? I’ve got an eye for this!
Sophie : Paul, be reasonable! At the very least, ask your brother to help you. It’ll be safer with the two of you.
Paul : Michel? He’s even clumsier than I am! No, no, I’d rather manage on my own.
Sophie : Then at least get a sturdier ladder! This one is wobbling all over the place!
Paul : This ladder’s perfectly fine! Here, look… *starts to climb*
Sophie : Paul! Get down immediately! You’re not even wearing your hard hat!
Paul : A hard hat? For doing DIY at my place? You’re kidding!
Thomas : Dad, honestly, on construction sites, nobody works without protective gear…
Paul : Oh, for crying out loud! Will you let me go already? I know what I’m doing!
Sophie : *angry* Do you even hear yourself? Mr. Know-It-All! And if you kill yourself, what will become of us?
Paul : *coming back down* Oh, great! Now I’m going to kill myself! You’re really overreacting, Sophie!
Sophie : Am I exaggerating? Last year, the neighbor fell off his roof. Six months in the hospital!
Thomas : Um… if I may… why don’t we call a professional instead ?
Paul : A professional? Have you seen the rates? A thousand euros minimum for a job like that!
Sophie : Paul, our lives are worth more than a thousand euros, aren’t they?
Paul : *sighing* Okay, fine… but at least let me get an estimate. We’ll see.
Sophie : Ah! Finally, some common sense! And promise me you won’t touch anything until then.
Paul : Yeah, yeah… I promise. But if the estimate is too expensive, I’ll do it myself!
Sophie : We’ll discuss it again when the time comes. In the meantime, put all that equipment away!
Thomas : Well now, that turned out well! Dad, do you want me to help you look for tradespeople online?
Paul : *grumbling* Internet… pfft… back in my day, we managed another way…
Sophie : *smiling* Come on, you grump! I’ll make you a nice cup of coffee to cheer you up!
Paul : *softening* Okay, fine… but I’m still keeping my safety boots!
Sophie : *laughing* Suit yourself, my weekend DIYer!
Thomas : By the way, Dad, I might know someone reliable and not too expensive…
Paul : Oh? Well, in that case, I’m interested! We can always take a look…
Sophie : Perfect! It’s a deal then. No more dangerous DIY!
