General wardrobe cleaning – what to throw away, what to keep

DIALOGUE

Sophie: Bon, Thomas, on s’y met ?
Thomas: Ouais, tu as raison…
Thomas: OK, OK, tu as gagné. Poubelle pour les deux.
Sophie: Tiens, mes vieilles baskets !
Thomas: Euh… vert kaki ?
Bon, on avance bien. Oh regarde !

English translation

Sophie and Thomas decided to take advantage of the weekend to do a big clear-out of their wardrobe. They have just moved into a smaller apartment and absolutely need to make space. It’s the perfect opportunity to get rid of the clothes they haven’t worn in years.

DIALOGUE

Sophie: Okay, Thomas, shall we get started? This wardrobe is completely overflowing! We can’t even close the doors anymore.
Thomas: Yeah, you’re right… Uh, where do we start? There’s so much stuff in there!
Sophie: Come on, let’s make three piles: keep, donate and throw away. Hey, look at this sweater! When did you last wear it?
Thomas: Ah, that one? Well… I don’t know, maybe two years ago? But it’s still in good condition, right!
Sophie: Thomas, be honest! If it’s been sitting at the back of the wardrobe for two years, it means you don’t really like it anymore.
Thomas: Yeah… Fine, the “donate” pile. And what’s this? Oh no! My old ripped jeans!
Sophie: Ah, I was wondering when you’d find it! That one is completely ruined. Trash!
Thomas: Wait, wait! It has sentimental value! It’s the one I was wearing when we met!
Sophie: Great! But take a good look at it… There are more holes than fabric! And anyway, you haven’t been able to fit into it for ages.
Thomas: Uh… that’s true. Darn, it still makes me a bit sad. Okay, the “to throw away” pile then.
Sophie: There! Oh my, what is that? This shocking pink dress? I don’t even remember buying it!
Thomas: Oh yes! It was for your cousin’s wedding. You’d found it on sale and you were so happy.
Sophie: Really? Well, it doesn’t appeal to me at all anymore. Besides, it doesn’t fit me anymore, I’ve put on a few kilos since…
Thomas: Hey, don’t be ridiculous! But if you don’t like it anymore, off it goes – to give away.
Sophie: Wait, Thomas! What are you doing with your shirts? Are you putting them all back in the wardrobe?
Thomas: Of course I do, I need them for work!
Sophie: But look at this one! It’s all yellowed around the collar! And that other one has a huge stain!
Thomas: Oh really? I hadn’t seen it… Uh, maybe I could get it cleaned?
Sophie: Honey, be realistic! A stain that big, after all this time? It’ll never come out.
Thomas: OK, OK, you win. Both in the bin.
Sophie: Oh, my old sneakers! They’re completely worn out but they’re so comfortable!
Thomas: Sophie, the soles have holes! You’ll catch a cold in those!
Sophie: I know, but… Oh, and my leather boots! I love them, but the heel’s been broken for months.
Thomas: You can get them repaired at the cobbler, can’t you?
Sophie: Good idea! I’ll put them aside then. Ah, but tell me, what’s that weird jacket?
Thomas: Which one? Ah, that one! It’s my 90s suit jacket. It was super trendy back then!
Sophie: Thomas… the shoulder pads, really? You look like a rugby player! And that color… what exactly is it?
Thomas: Uh… khaki green? Okay, fine, maybe it’s a bit out of fashion now.
Sophie: A bit? My God, luckily you don’t wear it anymore! Come on, give it away – someone might think it’s vintage.
Thomas: What? Vintage? It’s not that old!
Sophie: Thomas, we’re in 2024, not 1995! Well, we’re making good progress. Oh look! My polka-dot swimsuit!
Thomas: It’s cute! Why do you want to get rid of it?
Sophie: It lost its elasticity… and the polka dots have faded. It used to be white and red, now it’s… pink and burgundy.
Thomas: Ah, yes, indeed… Give that away too, then?
Sophie: No, better to throw it away, it’s really worn out. So, shall we take a break? My back hurts from bending over so much!
Thomas: Excellent idea! And could we call a charity to pick up the “to-donate” pile?
Sophie: Yes! There’s one that comes through the neighborhood. I’ll contact them tomorrow.
Thomas: Great! All in all, we did a good job. The wardrobe will finally be able to breathe!
Sophie: And so will we! It feels good to declutter, even though it’s hard to part with some belongings.
Thomas: Yeah, but now we’ll be able to buy ourselves new clothes without feeling guilty!
Sophie: Oh no, no way! The goal is to have fewer things, not to go and buy replacements right away!
Thomas: Uh… yes, of course! That’s what I meant…
