Maxime : Quel mail ?
Maxime : Zut alors !
Tu as l’air complètement désorienté !
Maxime : Une asso ? Il y en a beaucoup ?
Léa : Une centaine ! Sport, théâtre, débats, musique… Tu as des hobbies particuliers ?
Tu as tes identifiants d’inscription ?
English translation
It’s the start of the academic year, and Maxime, a first-year history student, arrives on campus for his very first day of classes. Completely lost in this new environment, he desperately searches for the lecture hall where his introductory medieval history class is supposed to take place. Luckily, he runs into Léa, a third-year student who knows the campus well and agrees to help him, despite a few small unexpected hiccups.
DIALOGUE
Maxime : Excuse me, uh… could you help me? I’m completely lost! I’m looking for the Descartes lecture hall but I feel like I’ve been going in circles for half an hour.
Léa : Ah, a new student! *smiles* Don’t panic, it happens to everyone on the first day. The Descartes lecture hall… which class is it for?
Maxime : Medieval history with Professor Dubois. The class starts at 10:00 and it’s already 9:50! I’m going to be late on the very first day – that’s the last straw!
Léa : Dubois? Oh, actually, I have some bad news for you… He’s sick this week. Didn’t you get the email?
Maxime : What email? I didn’t get anything at all! How come?
Léa : Did you sign up on the university platform? You know, the ENT – the Digital Workspace?
Maxime : The ENT? Uh… they mentioned it to me during registration but I didn’t really pay attention. I thought it was optional!
Léa : *laughs* Oh dear! Poor you – you’ll be in trouble if you don’t start using it! That’s where all the important information shows up: course cancellations, assignments due, grades…
Maxime : Oh no! I messed up right from the start. How am I supposed to catch up now?
Léa : Come on, come with me to the university library. We’ll help you set up your account and catch up on the info. By the way, I’m Léa, a third-year history student.
Maxime : Thank you so much! I’m Maxime. You’re a lifesaver! Where’s this famous university library?
Léa : Follow me, it’s just behind the main building. Tell me, where are you from? You look completely disoriented!
Maxime : I’m from the countryside, from a tiny town of 2,000 people. My high school only had 300 students in total! So here, just in my year of the history program, how many of us are there?
Léa : About 180 in first year. But don’t worry, you’ll make friends quickly. Where are you staying?
Maxime : In university residence, at the Crous. But honestly, I feel a bit lost. Everything is so big, so impersonal…
Léa : I understand, I had the same shock three years ago. Here we are at the university library. Oh no, look… there’s a sign that says “Closed for IT maintenance”.
Maxime : Oh great! This couldn’t have come at a worse time! So what do we do now?
Léa : Don’t panic! I have an idea. My boyfriend Antoine works at the student services desk. He should be able to help you fix your student portal problem.
Maxime : Are you sure it won’t bother him? I wouldn’t want to impose…
Léa : No, he’s really nice! Besides, he loves showing new students around. Come on, let’s go!
Maxime : By the way, aside from the student portal, do you have any other survival tips for a newbie like me?
Léa : Oh yes, absolutely! First, join a student association as soon as you can. It’s the best way to meet people and settle in.
Maxime : A student association? Are there lots of them?
Léa : Around a hundred! Sports, theatre, debates, music… Do you have any particular hobbies?
Maxime : Well, I’ve been playing guitar for a few years and I love cinema. Is there anything like that?
Léa : Of course! There’s “Guitars & Co” for music and the university film club. Great atmosphere in both!
Maxime : Great! Uh… and when it comes to studying, how does it work? In high school I had my little routines, but here…
Léa : So, tip number one: never skip tutorials. The tutorial instructors often give hints about the exams.
Maxime : Tutorials, midterms… I still have vocabulary to learn! What’s the difference exactly?
Léa : TDs are “travaux dirigés” – small groups of 25-30 students. “Partiels” are the end-of-semester exams.
Maxime : Alright, noted! And what about the textbooks? They cost a fortune, don’t they?
Léa : Tip: buy second-hand from second- and third-year students. We often organize sales at the start of the year.
Maxime : Oh, look, there’s your boyfriend! He looks busy – shall we not bother him?
Léa : Antoine! Hey! Can you give us a hand? I found a student in distress!
Antoine : Hi Léa! Of course, what’s going on?
Léa : Maxime can’t access his student portal and he’s missing all the important information. The library is closed, could you help him?
Antoine : No problem! Come on, Maxime, we’ll sort this out in two minutes. Do you have your registration login details?
Maxime : Uh… somewhere in my bag! Thanks so much, you two are really great!
Léa : You’re welcome! And don’t hesitate if you have any other questions. Helping each other out is sacred among students!
Maxime : I have to admit I’m already feeling better! This first day was off to a bad start but in the end…
Antoine : You’ll see, in a few weeks you’ll know the campus inside out! Come on, let’s get to work now!
