Farewell for a departing colleague – organizing a meeting

Marc : Ah oui, salut Sophie ! Euh… ben justement, j’ai quelques idées. On pourrait organiser ça vendredi après-midi, non ?
Sophie : Vendredi ? Hmm…
Marc : Tiens, j’y pensais justement !
Marc : Tu as raison, Sophie.
Sophie : De rien ! C’est normal, on est une équipe ! À tout à l’heure, Marc !

In the offices of TechnoSoft in Lyon, Sophie and Marc are discussing the arrangements for a farewell party for their colleague Thomas, who is leaving the company after five years. They need to coordinate the details of this small farewell gathering that will take place next week.

DIALOGUE

Sophie : Hi Marc! So, have you had time to think about Thomas’s farewell party?
Marc : Oh yes, hi Sophie! Um… well, actually, I’ve got a few ideas. We could organize it on Friday afternoon, couldn’t we?
Sophie : Friday? Hmm… I’m not sure. I think Thomas said he was finishing on Wednesday. Are you sure?
Marc : Oh really? Darn! I was sure his last day was Friday. Can you check with HR?
Sophie : Of course, no problem. Well, in the meantime, we can still plan the rest. How many people do you think we’ll be?
Marc : Well, there’s the whole development team, plus the salespeople who work with him… I’d say about fifteen people, give or take.
Sophie : Great! It’ll be nice. What would you suggest for the venue? The meeting room or somewhere outside?
Marc : Um… with the way the weather’s been, I’d lean towards holding it indoors. The meeting room on the third floor could work, right?
Sophie : Yeah, good idea! It’s big enough and it has a nice view. So, what about the food? Should we do something simple or go for something more elaborate?
Marc : Well, I’d vote for simple but good! You know, some finger foods, a few sandwiches, things to nibble on…
Sophie : Perfect! And what about drinks? Champagne is a must for the occasion, don’t you think?
Marc : Oh, of course! A bottle of champagne, plus soft drinks for those who don’t drink alcohol. And coffee too, of course.
Sophie : Excellent idea! By the way, maybe we should arrange a small gift from the team – what do you think?
Marc : Oh, I was just thinking that! We could set up a collection – like fifteen euros per person, that should be enough for something nice.
Sophie : Perfect! Can you go around the offices to collect the money? I can take care of looking for the gift.
Marc : Uh… all right, but do you have any idea what we could give him? Where’s Thomas going again?
Sophie : He’s going to work for a competitor in Paris. Maybe a nice book about Lyon, so he’ll have a keepsake from the city?
Marc : Mm… or maybe something more practical for his new job? A nice briefcase, or a luxury planner?
Sophie : Oh dear, Marc! You’re not very romantic, are you? Well, we’ll see what we can find. It’s the thought that counts, right?
Marc : You’re right, Sophie. By the way, who’s going to give the little speech? Someone has to say a few words…
Sophie : Well… uh… maybe you? You’ve known him longer than I have. You worked together on the Martineau project, didn’t you?
Marc : Darn! Me and speeches don’t mix – I’ll stammer like a beginner. Couldn’t you take care of it?
Sophie : Oh, come on, Marc! You’re exaggerating! You’ll be just fine. And besides, it’s true that you two have a long professional history together.
Marc : All right… but will you help me prepare a few words? I wouldn’t want to say anything silly.
Sophie : Of course! We can work on it together. Something warm but not too long, so as not to dampen the atmosphere.
Marc : Perfect! So let’s recap: you check the exact date and take care of the gift, I’ll collect the money and book the room?
Sophie : That’s right! And for the food and drinks, shall we split them? I can take the hors d’oeuvres and you take the champagne?
Marc : Deal! Oh, by the way, how should we let everyone know? An email to everyone or word of mouth?
Sophie : A quick friendly email would be safer. I’ll take care of it as soon as I’ve confirmed the date. Do you think we should invite people from other departments as well?
Marc : Good question… Thomas knows quite a few people at the company. We could ask Sylvie from accounting, she’ll be able to tell us who we should notify.
Sophie : Great idea! Well then, I think we’ve covered everything. It’s going to be a great farewell party!
Marc : I certainly hope so! Thomas deserves it – he’s a great colleague. We’re really going to miss having him on the team.
Sophie : That’s for sure… All right, I’m off to see HR about the date. Shall we keep each other posted during the day?
Marc : Perfect! See you later, Sophie. And thanks for your help, you’re great at organizing this kind of thing!
Sophie : You’re welcome! It’s only natural, we’re a team! See you later, Marc!
