Thomas : Sexiste ? Tu y vas fort ! Marc et Pierre ont ri aussi, hein !
Sophie : Tiens, justement, parlons-en de Marc ! Tu as vu sa tête quand tu as fait ta blague sur son nouveau travail ?
Thomas : Euh… non, pas vraiment. Pourquoi ?
Thomas : Mouais… Tu as peut-être raison.
Thomas : Tu as raison…
Sophie : Et si tu as un doute, regarde-moi. Je te ferai signe !
Thomas : Marché conclu ! Bon, et maintenant, on se réconcilie ?
English translation
Sophie and Thomas, a couple in their thirties, are talking in their living room after an evening at friends’. Sophie seems upset by Thomas’s behavior during the evening, particularly by his jokes which she considers inappropriate. Thomas, for his part, doesn’t understand why his girlfriend is reacting so badly to what he considers innocent humor.
DIALOGUE
Sophie : Thomas, we need to talk about what happened tonight at Léa and Marc’s.
Thomas : Uh… what happened? We had a great evening, didn’t we?
Sophie : Excellent? Are you kidding me! Your jokes about Léa’s weight – do you think that’s funny?
Thomas : Come on, I was only joking! She knows I’m just teasing her in a friendly way.
Sophie : Gently? Thomas, you said in front of everyone that she should stop eating desserts!
Thomas : So what, it was a joke! And she laughed too…
Sophie : She laughed out of politeness, don’t you see the difference? I could clearly see that she was embarrassed.
Thomas : Listen, Sophie, Léa and I have known each other for years. We tease each other all the time!
Sophie : Teasing’s fine, but you crossed a line this time. And that’s not all…
Thomas : Oh? What have I done wrong now?
Sophie : Your comments about women drivers when Sandrine was telling us about her accident…
Thomas : Oh come on! It was tongue-in-cheek! Everyone knows I don’t really think that!
Sophie : That’s exactly the problem! You think that because it’s “just a joke” you can say whatever you want?
Thomas : Come on, Sophie, can’t we say anything anymore? What happened to the sense of humour?
Sophie : A sense of humour isn’t about mocking people’s insecurities or repeating sexist clichés!
Thomas : Sexist? You’re going too far! Marc and Pierre laughed too, you know!
Sophie : Oh, speaking of Marc! Did you see his face when you made that joke about his new job?
Thomas : Uh… no, not really. Why?
Sophie : He’d just told us he was afraid he wouldn’t be up to the job, and you said that, indeed, the position was way too good for him!
Thomas : But it was to put him at ease! To help him put things into perspective!
Sophie : Belittling him in front of his girlfriend? Really, Thomas, sometimes I wonder if you think before you speak.
Thomas : Okay, fine, maybe that one wasn’t great… But you’re still exaggerating!
Sophie : Am I exaggerating? And what about your joke about Léa’s mother’s age, then?
Thomas : Darn, I’d forgotten that one… But she didn’t say anything!
Sophie : Because she was shocked! A 65-year-old woman – you told her she could be in a museum!
Thomas : Oh… when you put it that way… But for heaven’s sake, how am I supposed to know where the line is?
Sophie : By putting yourself in other people’s shoes! By thinking before you speak!
Thomas : Okay, but you make jokes sometimes too…
Sophie : Of course, but I don’t attack people’s insecurities! There’s a difference between self-deprecation and humor that hurts.
Thomas : Yeah… You might be right. But how do I make it up now?
Sophie : Well, you could start by apologizing to Léa and her mother, couldn’t you?
Thomas : Do you really think that’s necessary? Won’t it make things even more awkward?
Sophie : On the contrary! It will show that you are capable of acknowledging your mistakes.
Thomas : And what about Marc?
Sophie : Same. A short message to apologize and maybe tell him that you trust him to do well in his new job.
Thomas : You’re right… I hadn’t realized my jokes could hurt so much.
Sophie : Humor is wonderful when it brings people together, not when it hurts them. Do you understand the difference?
Thomas : Yes, I see. I’ll be more careful in the future. And… thank you for telling me.
Sophie : You’re welcome, darling. That’s also part of being in a relationship: telling each other things, even when it’s not easy.
Thomas : I promise, next time I’ll think twice before making my jokes!
Sophie : If you ever have any doubts, look at me. I’ll give you a sign!
Thomas : Deal! So, shall we make up now?
