Dialogue about planning a trip after finishing work

Sylvie : Chouette ! Fais voir… Oh là là, il y en a des tonnes ! L’Asie, l’Amérique du Sud, l’Australie… Tu as vu les prix ?
Bernard : Tu as raison. Regarde, l’Espagne, l’Italie…
On s’entend bien, non ?
L’anglais suffira largement ! Tu te rappelles tes cours de russe ? Un désastre !
Bernard : Hé ! C’était il y a quarante ans ! Bon allez, va pour l’anglais…
Sylvie : Parfait ! Alors, on s’y met dès demain ? Internet, guides, réservations…
Bernard : Avec plaisir ma chérie ! Notre nouvelle vie commence enfin !

English translation

Sylvie and Bernard, married for thirty years, have just retired. They are in their living room on a rainy Sunday afternoon, leafing through travel brochures and discussing their plans for adventures now that they finally have free time.

DIALOGUE

Sylvie : So, my darling, now that we’re officially done working, what do we do? Are we just going to stand here watching the rain?

DIALOGUE

Sylvie : So, my darling, now that we’re officially done working, what do we do? Are we just going to stand here watching the rain?
Bernard : Oh no, not at all! I fully intend to make the most of our freedom. Look, I picked up all these brochures at the travel agency yesterday.
Sylvie : Great! Let me see… Oh my, there are so many! Asia, South America, Australia… Have you seen the prices?
Bernard : Um, well… not really in detail. But hey, we’ve been saving for this for years, haven’t we?
Sylvie : Hmm, yes, but still… Here, look at this tour in Vietnam. Three weeks for €2,800 per person. That’s still a pretty steep price!
Bernard : Oh really? Is it that expensive? I thought life was cheaper in Asia…
Sylvie : It’s the transportation that costs a fortune, my old man. And then the hotels, if we don’t want to sleep just anywhere…
Bernard : You’re right. Well, what if we started with Europe then? Look, Spain, Italy… We can even go there by car!
Sylvie : That’s an idea! At least we’ll have better control of the budget. And anyway, we can stop wherever we want, change our itinerary…
Bernard : Exactly! So then, what appeals to you most? I’d really like to see Andalusia, Seville, Granada…
Sylvie : Oh yes! And the little white villages! But tell me, do you think we can stand being together 24 hours a day for three weeks?
Bernard : What do you mean? We get along well, don’t we?
Sylvie : Yes, yes, of course! But up until now, we never went away for more than fifteen days. Now we’re talking about trips of several weeks, even several months…
Bernard : Ah, I see… Are you afraid we’ll get on each other’s nerves?
Sylvie : Well, let’s say… um… you snore, I get up early, you stay in bed…
Bernard : Hey now! I don’t snore that much! And besides, you want to visit every museum, I like to just sit on a café terrace…
Sylvie : You see? We don’t necessarily have the same expectations!
Bernard : All right, but we can work something out. We each do our own things in the morning, and meet up in the afternoon?
Sylvie : Hey, that’s not a bad idea! And besides, there’s nothing to stop us from taking several shorter trips instead of one very long one.
Bernard : There! Come on, let’s start again from the beginning. What would really make you happy?
Sylvie : As for me, I must admit I’d really love to see the Nordic countries. Norway, the fjords…
Bernard : Darn! I was thinking of sunshine and warmth! Fjords in October, brrr!
Sylvie : Oh, wait! What if we did both? The Nordic countries next summer, and Spain in winter?
Bernard : That works! That way we’ll follow the seasons. Clever!
Sylvie : And as for Asia and all that, we’ll see later. Maybe we should first get used to travelling together for long periods.
Bernard : You’re absolutely right. Okay, so first step: shall we plan a tour of Norway for June?
Sylvie : Perfect! But this time, let’s get the budget sorted out beforehand, okay? No nasty surprises!
Bernard : I promise! And shall we buy a Norwegian phrasebook too?
Sylvie : Oh no! English will be more than enough! Do you remember your Russian lessons? A disaster!
Bernard : Hey! That was forty years ago! Okay then, English it is…
Sylvie : Perfect! So, shall we get started on it tomorrow? Internet, guidebooks, bookings…
Bernard : With pleasure, my darling! Our new life is finally beginning!
Sylvie : I can’t wait! Who would have thought that at sixty we’d still have so many plans?
Bernard : The best is yet to come, you’ll see!
