Dialogue about lack of time for each other

Thomas: Zut, tu as raison…
Oh Thomas, ça me ferait tellement plaisir…
Donc on aurait quoi, quatre heures ensemble ?
Sophie: Il y aura toujours quelque chose, Thomas. Toujours une bonne excuse.
Thomas: Et toi ?
Sinon… *elle laisse sa phrase en suspens*
Thomas: D’accord. Donne-moi une semaine. Je vais tout réorganiser. Promis.
Sophie: Une semaine, Thomas.

English translation

Sophie and Thomas have been a couple for two years. They meet up in a Parisian café after several weeks during which they have barely seen each other because of their busy schedules. Sophie works as a lawyer at a large firm and Thomas is a chef at a trendy restaurant. This difficult conversation could determine the future of their relationship.

DIALOGUE
Sophie: Thomas! Finally, it’s been ages since we’ve had a quiet moment like this.
Thomas: Yes, uh… sorry about last night, I had to stay at the restaurant again until past midnight. The new owner is putting crazy pressure on us.
Sophie: Well, that’s exactly what I wanted to talk to you about. We hardly see each other anymore, Thomas. Between your job and mine…
Thomas: Ah, don’t start with that, please. You know very well it’s not my fault. You get home really late too!
Sophie: But I’m at least trying to keep my weekends free! You even work on Sundays now.
Thomas: Huh? Sophie, are you kidding? Last weekend you spent all of Saturday at the office preparing your Martineau file!
Sophie: That was exceptional and you know it! As for you… *sigh* Tell me, when did we last have dinner together?
Thomas: Uh… well… last week, right?
Sophie: Thomas, it’s been three weeks! And what’s more, we had sushi delivered at 10 p.m. because you came home exhausted.
Thomas: Darn, you’re right… Time really does fly. But listen, it’s temporary. As soon as things settle down at the restaurant…
Sophie: You’ve been saying that for months! And I feel like I’m living with a ghost.
Thomas: That’s tough to hear. I miss our evenings together, our walks too…
Sophie: So why aren’t you doing anything to change that? Yesterday, I tried to call you during my lunch break; you didn’t even pick up.
Thomas: I was in the middle of service! You know it’s impossible.
Sophie: And me, do you think it’s easy? My colleagues make fun of me because I leave at 7 p.m. so I can see you, and you’re not even there!
Thomas: Wait, wait… You’re leaving at 7 p.m. now? But you told me you were finishing around 9 p.m. these days!
Sophie: Well, yeah! I try to get home earlier, I hope we can spend time together, but you don’t get home until 11 p.m., completely exhausted.
Thomas: Oh dear… I didn’t realize. Great, I’m really hopeless.
Sophie: It’s not that you’re useless, Thomas. It’s that we don’t make any effort for each other anymore.
Thomas: Yes, I do! In fact, I even asked Julien to cover for me next Saturday.
Sophie: Oh? You didn’t tell me!
Thomas: I wanted to surprise you. I thought we could go to Fontainebleau, like we used to.
Sophie: *timid smile* Is that true? Oh Thomas, that would make me so happy…
Thomas: But, uh… there’s a little problem. I have to be back by 6 p.m. because we have a special service in the evening.
Sophie: *face closes* Ah. So we’d have, what, four hours together?
Thomas: Well… yes, but it’s better than nothing, isn’t it?
Sophie: Thomas, do you realize what you just said? “It’s better than nothing”?
Thomas: No, that’s not what I meant! Sophie, don’t twist my words.
Sophie: I’m not twisting anything at all. You see our relationship as something that comes after everything else.
Thomas: No! You are what matters most to me, you know that.
Sophie: Then prove it! Take a proper weekend, no obligations, no work phone.
Thomas: It’s complicated right now…
Sophie: There will always be something, Thomas. Always a good excuse.
Thomas: And you? Couldn’t you ask your associate to take on a few files?
Sophie: I’ve already started doing that! But if I’m the only one making concessions…
Thomas: Okay, okay. Let me talk to the boss. I’ll try to arrange something.
Sophie: “Try”… *she sighs* You know what? Take your time to think. I can’t keep going on like this.
Thomas: Sophie, you’re not going to leave me over this?
Sophie: I’m not leaving you. But I need us to get back to what we had before. Otherwise… *she trails off*
Thomas: Okay. Give me a week. I’ll reorganize everything. Promise.
Sophie: One week, Thomas. After that, we’ll need to have a serious discussion about our future.
