DIALOGUE
Sophie : Thomas, ça va ? Tu as l’air… euh… comment dire… un peu ailleurs ces derniers temps.
Thomas : Ah bon ? Non non, tout va bien. Pourquoi tu dis ça ?
Sophie : Ben, je sais pas… On dirait que tu évites certains sujets.
Thomas : Bon d’accord, d’accord…
Sophie : Avec quoi exactement ?
Sophie : Ah ! On y arrive enfin !
Thomas : Tu as peur de quoi, toi ?
Sophie : Vraiment ?
Thomas : Oui, mais tu me promets de ne pas me présenter comme ton futur mari, hein ?
Sophie : Ah ! Tu me fais rire !
Thomas : Tu as raison.
Sophie ?
Sophie : Oui ?
Thomas : Merci de ne pas avoir abandonné.
Sophie : De rien, mon trouillard préféré !

Sophie and Thomas meet in a Parisian café after several successful dates. Their relationship is becoming increasingly serious, but Thomas has seemed distant for some time. Sophie decides to address the issue troubling her: the future of their relationship and Thomas’s reluctance to commit further.
DIALOGUE
Sophie : Thomas, are you okay? You seem… uh… how to say… a bit distant lately.
Thomas : Oh? No, no, everything’s fine. Why do you say that?
Sophie : Well, I don’t know… It seems like you’re avoiding certain subjects. Yesterday, when I mentioned my sister’s wedding next month, you completely changed the subject.
Thomas : Ah, well… Listen, Sophie, it’s just that… I mean, you know we’ve only known each other for three months.
Sophie : Three and a half months! So what? I’m not asking you to marry me tomorrow, you know! I just wanted to know if you’d like to come with me.
Thomas : Yeah, I get it, but… uh… meeting your whole family is a big step, isn’t it?
Sophie : That’s funny! I’ve already met your parents twice, and it didn’t scare me.
Thomas : It was different! It was… uh… just by chance, you know. We ran into them at the restaurant.
Sophie : By chance? Thomas, you told me your mother was waiting for us! Do you remember?
Thomas : Okay, okay… Listen, Sophie, I… I’m having trouble with all of this.
Sophie : With what exactly? With me?
Thomas : No! Not with you! You’re wonderful, really. It’s just that… darn, how do I explain it to you…
Sophie : Go on, try. I’ve got time.
Thomas : Well… My last relationship ended very badly. Emma and I had been together for two years and…
Sophie : Ah! We’re finally getting somewhere! You never told me about Emma.
Thomas : Because it’s painful, Sophie! She left me overnight. One morning she told me she was suffocating, that she needed space.
Sophie : So what? That’s her, not me! We’re not all the same, you know.
Thomas : I know, but… I’m afraid of reliving the same thing. I’m afraid of getting too attached and getting hurt again.
Sophie : Uh… excuse me, but you’re making me a bit panicky. Do you mean you’re not getting attached to me?
Thomas : Yes! Of course I do! That’s exactly the problem! I care about you – enormously so.
Sophie : Well then, what’s the problem? I care about you too!
Thomas : The problem is, the more I care about you, the more terrified I am of losing you. It’s stupid, isn’t it?
Sophie : That’s not stupid, Thomas, but it’s… how to say… a bit contradictory, isn’t it?
Thomas : How is that contradictory?
Sophie : Well, if you’re afraid of losing me, you put distance between us. But by putting distance between us, you’re actually risking losing me!
Thomas : Ah… uh… seen that way… I hadn’t thought of it that way.
Sophie : And me in all this? Don’t you think I’m scared too? Do you think it’s easy for me to never know which way to turn?
Thomas : What are you afraid of?
Sophie : Well, your indecision! Sometimes you’re adorable, cuddly, attentive… and sometimes it’s like you regret being here!
Thomas : Oh dear… I realize I’m really hopeless…
Sophie : You’re not hopeless, Thomas! You’re just… stuck. But I can’t build anything with someone who always has one foot out the door.
Thomas : Are you saying that… you want us to break up?
Sophie : No! Well… not necessarily. But we need to find a solution. I can’t go on like this.
Thomas : What if… what if we tried to take it slowly? Step by step?
Sophie : How do you mean “slowly”?
Thomas : Well… first of all, for your sister’s wedding… okay, I’ll come with you.
Sophie : Really?
Thomas : Yes, but promise me you won’t introduce me as your future husband, okay?
Sophie : Ah! You make me laugh! Okay, I’ll just say you’re my very cute boyfriend but a complete scaredy-cat!
Thomas : Hey! That’s not nice!
Sophie : Come on, I’m kidding! But Thomas… we should talk more like this. When you keep everything to yourself, I go crazy.
Thomas : You’re right. I’ll make an effort, I promise. But you too, be patient with me, okay?
Sophie : Okay. But no more dodging! If something’s bothering you, tell me about it directly.
Thomas : Deal! And… uh… Sophie?
Sophie : Yes?
Thomas : Thank you for not giving up.
Sophie : You’re welcome, my favorite scaredy-cat!
