Thomas : Au contraire !
Sophie : *(surprise)* Zut alors !
Thomas : Chouette ! On y va ?
Sophie : Oui, tu as raison.
English translation
Sophie and Thomas, a young couple who have been married for two years, are looking for a new apartment. They are currently viewing a flat in the city centre with Madame Dubois, their estate agent, but they cannot agree on what kind of neighbourhood they want to settle in.
DIALOGUE
Mrs Dubois : So, what do you think of this apartment? It’s ideally located, just a short walk from the metro and the shops.
Sophie : Oh, it’s gorgeous! And that view of the square is fantastic! Thomas, can you imagine? We could go downstairs for a coffee every morning!
Thomas : Uh… yes, it is nice, but… Sophie, we’ve already talked about this. I’d really prefer somewhere in the suburbs, you know.
Sophie : Oh really? But Thomas, we’d be right in the heart of everything here! The theatres, the restaurants, our friends…
Mrs Dubois : If I may ask, what are your top priorities?
Thomas : Well, for me, what concerns me is the space and the peace and quiet. Here, with the traffic noise, the honking… And besides, for the same price, in the suburbs we’d have twice the space!
Sophie : But darling, think about the commute! An hour of commuting morning and night is exhausting! And besides, we won’t have the social life we love anymore.
Thomas : Actually, I’m starting to get fed up with this constant hustle and bustle. I’d really like to have a small garden, to be able to have a barbecue on Sundays…
Mrs Dubois : I actually have a few properties in the inner suburbs, if you’re interested. Not too far, but greener.
Sophie : Thomas, be realistic! With our work schedules, we’d come home exhausted. And the children, when we have them? They’d be cut off from everything!
Thomas : On the contrary! They’d have space to play, parks, less pollution… It’s much better for raising a family, isn’t it?
Sophie : Um… hang on, which children exactly are you talking about? We’ve never really talked about that seriously!
Thomas : What do you mean? Well… I thought that… I mean, it’s normal, isn’t it? In two or three years…
Mrs Dubois : *(uncomfortable)* Er… maybe you should discuss it quietly between yourselves?
Sophie : *(surprise)* Goodness! Thomas, it sounds like we’re not talking about the same future! I don’t see myself with children at all for… oh, at least five years!
Thomas : But Sophie, I’m 32! I’m not going to wait indefinitely! And besides, a house is an investment in our future!
Sophie : A house? But… do you really want us to become one of those suburban couples who never go out again?
Mrs Dubois : Excuse me, but I have another appointment in twenty minutes…
Thomas : Sorry, Mrs Dubois. Sophie, listen, couldn’t we at least visit somewhere in the suburbs? To compare?
Sophie : *(sighing)* Okay, but on one condition: not too far from Paris. Maximum 30 minutes by transport.
Thomas : Deal! Are you okay with us looking at houses with gardens?
Sophie : *(hesitant)* Well… okay. But not a detached house just yet! Maybe an apartment with a terrace?
Mrs Dubois : Perfect! I happen to have a three-room apartment with a large terrace in Vincennes. Close to the RER, in a lively neighborhood but quieter than here.
Thomas : Ah, that’s interesting! Is that an acceptable compromise, Sophie?
Sophie : Vincennes… yes, why not. At least we’re still connected to Paris. And besides, there’s the Bois for walks!
Mrs Dubois : Excellent! And as for the budget, it’s still within your means. We can show it to you tomorrow if you’d like.
Thomas : Great! Shall we go? But Sophie, we really need to talk about our plans for a family…
Sophie : Yes, you’re right. We obviously have different timelines! But first, let’s visit this apartment.
Mrs Dubois : So, shall we meet tomorrow at 2:30 PM in front of Vincennes station?
Thomas : Perfect! Thank you very much, Mrs Dubois.
Sophie : Yes, thank you! And sorry for… well, for that little unexpected discussion!
Mrs Dubois : *(smiling)* Don’t worry, it happens more often than you’d think! See you tomorrow!
