Dialogue about buying gifts online vs at a shopping mall

DIALOGUE

Sophie : Alors Thomas, tu as fini tes achats de Noël ?
Thomas : D’accord, tu me convaincs presque…

English translation

Sophie and Thomas discuss their Christmas gift shopping for the family. Sophie prefers to do her shopping online from home, while Thomas likes the atmosphere of shopping malls. They compare the advantages and disadvantages of each shopping method.

DIALOGUE

Sophie : So, Thomas, have you finished your Christmas shopping? I ordered everything online last night, from the comfort of my sofa!
Thomas : Oh really? I haven’t started yet… I’m waiting for the weekend to go to the mall. Don’t you think buying things online is impersonal?
Sophie : Impersonal? Well, no, on the contrary! I can take my time, compare prices, read reviews… And besides, uh, no queues, no stress!
Thomas : Yeah, but how do you know if it’s good quality? You can’t touch or feel them… I like to examine products before I buy them.
Sophie : Huh? But all websites have HD photos now! And returns are free most of the time. Here, look at this bag I got for Mom.
Thomas : It looks nice, that’s true… But the Christmas atmosphere in the stores, the decorations, the music… That’s part of the fun, isn’t it?
Sophie : The atmosphere? You mean the crowds, the noise, the crying children? No thanks! And the salespeople who hassle you as soon as you walk in…
Thomas : Oh, come on, don’t exaggerate! Seeing all those presents actually motivates me, it gives me ideas. And I love wandering around, discovering things I wouldn’t have thought of.
Sophie : Okay, but budget-wise? Online I always find promo codes, discounts… And I can see the total right away, which prevents impulse buys.
Thomas : Yeah… But if you have a problem, what do you do? If something goes wrong, I just go back to the store and it’s sorted!
Sophie : Uh, Thomas, it’s 2024! Online customer service is really efficient now. And besides, no need to get back in the car or hunt for a parking space…
Thomas : Great, let’s talk about parking! It’s true it’s a real hassle… But once you’ve found a spot, you can do everything in one go. You have to wait for several deliveries, don’t you?
Sophie : Well, that’s exactly the point – it’s convenient! It spreads out over time, and that way Dad doesn’t see all the packages arriving on the same day… You know how nosy he is!
Thomas : Ah, that’s clever! But tell me, haven’t you ever had any unpleasant surprises? Damaged items, delivery delays?
Sophie : Yes, once… I had ordered a perfume for my sister, and uh… the bottle was broken. But they sent me a replacement immediately.
Thomas : You see! That would annoy me. I prefer to see what I’m buying. And besides, I like asking salespeople for advice, especially for tech gifts.
Sophie : The salespeople? You’re joking! Half the time they don’t know anything. Online customer reviews are much more reliable, trust me!
Thomas : Maybe… But still, what about the environmental side? All that packaging, the transport… It’s not very eco-friendly, your thing.
Sophie : Wait, are you kidding? You drive to the mall! For me, a single truck delivers to the whole neighborhood, it’s more eco-friendly in the end.
Thomas : Hmm, when you put it that way… Oh darn, I just thought of something! What if you’re not home for the delivery? That must be complicated, right?
Sophie : Not at all! I have it delivered to the office, or to the neighbors. And now there are plenty of parcel pickup points. It’s really flexible!
Thomas : Okay, you’re almost convincing me… But I have a date with my girlfriend on Saturday to go shopping. It’s our tradition!
Sophie : Ah, that’s different! If it’s to spend time together, I understand. But for efficiency, nothing beats online shopping!
Thomas : How about we make a compromise? I’ll look online first to spot the best deals, and then I’ll go check them out in the store?
Sophie : Excellent idea! That way you can even check if the store has the product in stock before you go. That’s what’s called “web-to-store”!
Thomas : Web-to-store? You know all the terms, huh! Okay, will you email me your favorite sites?
Sophie : With pleasure! You’ll see, once you get used to it, you won’t be able to do without it. But keep a little bit of Christmas magic anyway!
Thomas : I promise! And you, try to come with us on Saturday, just to see the window displays… They’re gorgeous this year!
Sophie : Why not! But just to look, okay? I’ve already finished my shopping!
