Determining who gets up at night for the baby

DIALOGUE

Thomas: Mouais…
Thomas: Allez, sois sympa…
Claire: Justement !
Thomas: Hein ? Je ne comprends plus rien…
Claire: Tu me dois une nuit, mon chéri !
Thomas: Promis ! Et… euh… tu peux me rappeler comment on prépare le biberon ?
Claire: Oh là là ! 180ml d’eau tiède, 6 mesures de lait ! C’est écrit sur la boîte !
Thomas: Ah oui, exact !
Thomas: D’accord ! Et dimanche, on fait comment ? C’est le tour de qui ?
Claire: On verra bien ! L’important, c’est qu’on partage équitablement !
Thomas: Parfait !
Thomas: Tu l’as bien mérité, ma chérie !

In this Parisian apartment, Claire and Thomas, young exhausted parents, are trying to organize themselves around the nighttime wake-ups of their little Emma, who is 4 months old. After several difficult nights, they urgently need to find a fair system that allows each of them to get a little rest.

DIALOGUE

Claire: Thomas, we need to talk seriously… I can’t take these sleepless nights anymore!
Thomas: Uh… yes, I know. Emma woke us up three times again last night. But it’s normal for a baby her age, isn’t it?
Claire: Of course it’s normal! But what’s not normal is that I’m always the one who gets up!
Thomas: Oh? But… I feel like I’m getting up too!
Claire: Thomas, let’s be honest! Last night, when Emma was crying around 2 a.m., you played dead in bed!
Thomas: Darn, I was really exhausted… And besides, you’re the one breastfeeding her, so it’s more practical for you to go, isn’t it?
Claire: Exactly! She’s only been on the bottle for a week. You can easily take care of her!
Thomas: Oh, that’s right… I forgot. So, what do you suggest?
Claire: Well, we could take turns! Every other night, for example?
Thomas: Mm… The problem is I have important meetings at the moment. If I’m too tired…
Claire: What about me then? Do you think I don’t have a job? My boss keeps complaining about my lateness!
Thomas: Okay, okay! But, you know, every other night might be a bit rigid, huh?
Claire: So what now? How do we do it?
Thomas: Uh… What if we did it in shifts instead? I’ll take until 3 a.m., and you take over after that?
Claire: Nonsense! Emma wakes up mostly between midnight and 2 a.m.! You’re taking the easy shift!
Thomas: Alright, alright… So the other way around! You until 3 a.m., me after!
Claire: Thomas, stop trying to wriggle out of it! Why not just every other night?
Thomas: Come on, be nice… This week I have the presentation for the Martin project. It’s really important!
Claire: Oh, come on! There’s always something important at the office! And what about my tiredness – does that count?
Thomas: Yes, of course! Listen, what if we tried a points system?
Claire: Points? What are you talking about?
Thomas: Yep! Each nighttime wake-up is one point. At the end of the week we count, and whoever has the fewest does the cleaning!
Claire: Are you kidding me? We’re not in a video game! This is about our daughter!
Thomas: Sorry, that was a stupid idea… Okay then, every other night, agreed!
Claire: Perfect! We’ll start tonight, and it’s your turn!
Thomas: Uh… tonight? But I took a sleeping pill last night, I didn’t hear her…
Claire: Exactly! You have a sleep debt to make up! Well… I mean… I have a sleep debt to make up!
Thomas: Huh? I don’t understand anything anymore…
Claire: You owe me one night, darling! So tonight, you’re in charge!
Thomas: Okay, okay… But what if she cries really loudly and I can’t calm her down?
Claire: Only wake me up in that case! Not at the first little peep!
Thomas: I promise! And… uh… can you remind me how to prepare the bottle?
Claire: Oh my! 180 ml of lukewarm water, 6 scoops of formula! It’s written on the box!
Thomas: Oh right, exactly! And what if she soils her diaper?
Claire: Thomas! You’re her father! You change her, you clean her, you put on a clean diaper!
Thomas: Of course, sorry… It’s the stress, you know…
Claire: Come on, it’ll be fine! And if it works, we’ll keep doing it like that!
Thomas: Okay! And Sunday, how do we do it? Whose turn is it?
Claire: We’ll see! The important thing is that we share fairly!
Thomas: Perfect! Well, I’ll go get the bottle ready for tonight… just to practice!
Claire: Good idea! I’ll finally be able to take a relaxing bath!
Thomas: You’ve really earned it, my darling!
