Allez, on s’y met ?
Sophie: Attends, attends… on s’y met ? Tu veux dire “je m’y mets”, c’est ça ?
Marc: Ben non, pourquoi ce serait forcément toi ? On a cuisiné ensemble, on nettoie ensemble, non ?
Sophie: Ah bon ?
Marc: Le sol ? Mais il n’est pas si sale que ça…
Sophie: Pas si sale ? Regarde un peu sous tes pieds ! On colle carrément !
Marc: Ah zut, c’est vrai… Bon, écoute, on tire à pile ou face ?
Sophie: Pour quoi faire ?
Marc: D’accord, d’accord… Tu as une idée géniale, je suppose ?
English translation
Marc and Sophie have just finished preparing a large meal for their friends. The kitchen is in a deplorable state: dirty dishes, pots and pans strewn about, the work surface covered in crumbs and splatters. They now have to decide who will take care of the cleaning, but neither of them really feels like doing it.
DIALOGUE
Sophie: Well… uh, what a mess in this kitchen! It looks like a bomb went off.
Marc: Yeah, that’s the downside of cooking for eight people. Come on, shall we get to it?
Sophie: Wait, wait… shall we get to it? You mean “I’ll get started”, is that it?
Marc: Well no, why would it necessarily be you? We cooked together, we clean up together, right?
Sophie: Oh really? Because if I remember correctly, I was the one who made the sauce, peeled all the vegetables AND prepared the dessert!
Marc: Okay, but I did the shopping, carried all the bags, and I took care of the meat…
Sophie: Well then! And who was doing the dishes as we went along while Monsieur was fussing over HIS meat?
Marc: Uh… OK, maybe you did work a bit harder than I did. What do you suggest, then?
Sophie: Well, you could at least clear the table and take care of the pots. I’ll wipe down the countertop and put everything away.
Marc: The pots? They’re so greasy! We’ll have to scrub them for hours!
Sophie: So what? My countertop is covered in tomato sauce up to the ceiling!
Marc: Okay, let’s do it this way: everyone cleans up what they dirtied. You – your vegetables and your sauce; me – my meat and my sides.
Sophie: Nonsense! We’re not going to split the kitchen into two territories! And anyway, who’s going to take care of the floor then?
Marc: The floor? But it’s not that dirty…
Sophie: Not that dirty? Look under your feet! We’re totally stuck!
Marc: Ah darn, that’s true… Okay, listen, shall we flip a coin?
Sophie: What for?
Marc: Well, the loser does all the kitchen work, and the other gets to relax in front of the TV.
Sophie: You’re kidding, I hope? We’re not kids! What if we organized this more sensibly instead?
Marc: Okay, okay… You have a brilliant idea, I suppose?
Sophie: We’ll split the chores according to our preferences. I hate scrubbing pots but I don’t mind vacuuming and mopping.
Marc: And me, I hate cleaning splatters off the walls, but pots are still okay…
Sophie: Perfect! So you’ll do the dishes and pots, and I’ll take care of the surfaces and the floor.
Marc: Yeah, but wait… who unloads the dishwasher?
Sophie: Whoever does the dishes, logically! You wash them, you put them away.
Marc: Meh… and who empties the overflowing trash bins?
Sophie: Uh… well, we hadn’t thought about that. They’re really full to the brim!
Marc: And you have to take out the bags, replace them… Well, we’ll do that together, right?
Sophie: OK, but I have another idea. What if we timed it? That could be fun!
Marc: Time the cleaning? Are you sure you’re all right?
Sophie: But of course! Let’s set ourselves a challenge: whoever finishes their game first wins. The winner doesn’t have to do the dishes tomorrow!
Marc: Ah, now this is getting interesting! Are you sure you want to take me on?
Sophie: Absolutely! But mind you, no cutting corners. We’ll check each other’s work at the end.
Marc: Deal! So, how long until we start?
Sophie: Let’s finish our coffees and then we’ll get started. In ten minutes?
Marc: Perfect! Uh… by the way, what are we going to do with that huge pot that won’t fit in the sink?
Sophie: Oh yes, that one… Well, we’ll clean it in the bathtub as usual!
Marc: Huh? In the bathtub? That’s disgusting!
Sophie: No, we’ll rinse it well afterwards! Come on, let’s get started – may the best one win!
Marc: Here we go! But I hope we’ll still have enough energy to enjoy our lovely evening afterward…
Sophie: Don’t worry, with a bit of music and good cheer, we’ll be finished in no time!
