Culinary experiments – agreement, or rather caution?

Marc: Attends, attends ! Éteins le four ! Ça brûle là-dedans !
Sophie: Mais non, c’est juste… Oh là là, effectivement ça sent le cramé. Aide-moi !
Marc: Bon sang, Sophie !
Sophie: Mais enfin, Marc !
Marc: Ensemble, oui ! Ça c’est une bonne idée. On pourra se surveiller mutuellement !
Sophie: Et on commencera par quoi ? Tu as des suggestions, chef Marc ?
Marc: Promis ! Et… Sophie ?
Sophie: Oui ?
Marc: La prochaine fois que tu veux expérimenter, préviens-moi. On fera ça ensemble, d’accord ?
Sophie: D’accord…
Marc: Mouais… Vivement les sushis !

English translation

Sophie and Marc are a young couple who have been living together for two years. Tonight, Sophie decided to surprise Marc by preparing a dish she had never cooked before – lacquered duck with Asian spices. Marc has just come home from work and finds his girlfriend in the kitchen, surrounded by exotic ingredients and suspicious smoke.

DIALOGUE

Marc: Hi honey! What is… uh… it smells weird in here. What are you cooking?
Sophie: Oh hi! Well, I wanted to surprise you. I’m making lacquered duck! I found a great recipe online.
Marc: Lacquered duck? You? But… you’ve never cooked that in your life, have you!
Sophie: So what? You have to start somewhere! Look, I bought lots of Chinese spices at the Asian market.
Marc: Uh… Sophie, why is there smoke coming out of the oven?
Sophie: Oh darn! That’s normal, I think… Well, I hope so. The recipe says to cook over high heat for…
Marc: Wait, wait! Turn off the oven! It’s burning in there!
Sophie: No, it’s just… Oh dear, it really does smell burnt. Help me!
Marc: For heaven’s sake, Sophie! Open the windows! We’re going to fill the whole apartment with smoke!
Sophie: I’m sorry… I just wanted to make you happy. The recipe looked so simple on YouTube.
Marc: YouTube? You learned to make Peking duck on YouTube? My poor darling…
Sophie: Don’t make fun of me! Besides, you’re not a Michelin-starred chef either, are you!
Marc: Granted, but I wouldn’t attempt dangerous experiments in our kitchen!
Sophie: Dangerous? Pfft, you’re overreacting! It’s just a bit… smoky.
Marc: A bit? Look at the duck! It’s completely black! It looks like charcoal!
Sophie: Alright, okay, it didn’t work out. But at least I tried something new!
Marc: Listen, I appreciate the intent, really. But next time, maybe we could start with something a bit more… basic?
Sophie: Like what? Buttered pasta? That’s lame!
Marc: No, but… I don’t know… a roast chicken? A beef bourguignon? Stuff we can at least manage.
Sophie: Speaking of which! I also bought wakame seaweed and miso paste to make a Japanese soup as a starter!
Marc: Oh no! Sophie, please! Not tonight! We’ve already got enough disasters like that!
Sophie: Oh come on, Marc! You’ve got to be bold in life! How are we going to make progress if we never take any risks?
Marc: Progress, okay, but not if it comes at the expense of our cooking… and our taste buds!
Sophie: Fine, Mr. Know-It-All! What do you suggest then?
Marc: Well… shall we order some sushi? That way you’ll get your Asian cuisine without risking a fire!
Sophie: Ha ha, very funny! Alright… fine, sushi it is. But promise me we’ll try cooking together this weekend.
Marc: Together, yes! That’s a good idea. We can keep an eye on each other!
Sophie: And what will we start with? Do you have any suggestions, Chef Marc?
Marc: Hmm… how about a risotto? It’s delicate but not too complicated. And at least we know the ingredients!
Sophie: A risotto… yes, why not. But I want to put my personal touch on it!
Marc: Your personal touch? Uh… like what, for example?
Sophie: I was thinking of adding shiitake mushrooms and maybe a bit of truffle…
Marc: Oh dear… we’re not out of the woods yet! Right, we’ll discuss the details later. Shall I order the sushi?
Sophie: All right, but next time I’m the one who chooses the restaurant! And don’t throw away my spices, they cost a fortune!
Marc: I promise! And… Sophie?
Sophie: Yes?
Marc: Next time you want to experiment, let me know. We’ll do it together, okay?
Sophie: All right… But admit it, it already smells better now that the windows are open!
Marc: Yeah… I can’t wait for the sushi!
