Conversation with a person who has undergone a difficult procedure or illness

Ça me déprime complètement.
Sophie : Je comprends…
Sophie : Marc !
Sophie : Bon, écoute-moi bien.
Marc : Tu as raison…
Sophie : Bon, maintenant parlons concret. Tu as besoin de quoi ? Courses ? Ménage ? Cuisine ?
Tu as ton travail, ta vie…
Sophie : Ah, tu recommences !
Ça me touche énormément.
Je me sens déjà mieux. Merci d’être venue.
Sophie : Normal !
Marc : Promis ! Et… euh… promis aussi pour la rééducation. Je ne forcerai plus.
Sophie : Parfait ! Bon, maintenant, montre-moi cette cuisine. On va préparer un festin !
Marc : Avec plaisir ! Et Sophie… vraiment, merci pour tout. Tu es une amie formidable.

DIALOGUE

Sophie : Hi Marc! How are you? I brought a few things to cheer you up…
Marc : Sophie! What a surprise! Uh… come in, come in. Sorry about the mess, I’m having trouble getting around on these crutches.
Sophie : Oh no, don’t apologize! Here, I brought your favorite sports magazines and some flowers to brighten the apartment up a bit.
Marc : That’s really kind of you… *sigh* Honestly, I didn’t expect it to be so hard.
Sophie : Oh? Did the operation go badly?
Marc : No, no, the operation itself went well, but… well, it’s the recovery that’s complicated. I thought I’d be back on my feet in a few days.
Sophie : So? What’s going on exactly?
Marc : Well, physiotherapy is an absolute nightmare! I’m in constant pain and I can’t even bend my knee properly.
Sophie : Oh dear… that must be frustrating for someone as active as you.
Marc : You can say that! I work out every day… and now I’m stuck on this couch. It’s really getting me down.
Sophie : I understand… But tell me, what does the doctor say? Is he optimistic?
Marc : Uh… actually, that’s where it gets complicated. There was a bit of a problem last week.
Sophie : What do you mean, “a problem”? You’re worrying me!
Marc : Well, I tried to push myself a bit during physio, and… damn, how to put it… I might have made things worse.
Sophie : Marc! You didn’t do that! You’re completely reckless!
Marc : I know, I know… But I was fed up with not being able to do anything! The physio was furious.
Sophie : And now? Do you need another operation?
Marc : No, fortunately not. But the healing process will be delayed by several weeks.
Sophie : *sigh* Listen, I can understand your frustration, but you need to be patient. Your body needs time.
Marc : Yeah, easy for you to say… You can still run, ride a bike, go out…
Sophie : What? Wait! Do you think I’m taking advantage of your situation? I’m worried about you, believe me!
Marc : No, no, I’m sorry… I didn’t mean that. I’m just in a bad mood right now.
Sophie : Okay, listen to me. You’re going to stop moping and we’ll find solutions together.
Marc : Solutions? Like what?
Sophie : Well, first of all, why didn’t you call me? I would have come earlier to help you!
Marc : I was ashamed… An athlete like me, reduced to this because of a stupid fall.
Sophie : There you go, typical men! Pride above all else! An accident can happen to anyone.
Marc : You’re right… I should have asked for help sooner.
Sophie : Okay, now let’s get practical. What do you need? Groceries? Cleaning? Cooking?
Marc : Uh… actually, all of that! *laughs* The fridge is empty and the apartment is in a state…
Sophie : Great! Finally you admit you need help! I can come three times a week.
Marc : No, Sophie, I can’t accept… You have your job, your life…
Sophie : There you go again! Listen, friends are meant to help each other. And anyway, it makes me happy.
Marc : *moved* I… I don’t know how to thank you. It means so much to me.
Sophie : Okay, no sentimentality! *laughs* In the meantime, what should we do for dinner tonight?
Marc : Well, I was thinking of ordering a pizza, as usual…
Sophie : No way! You’re going to eat properly. I’ll cook you a nice little meal.
Marc : Are you sure? Won’t it bother you?
Sophie : Of course not! And besides, we’ll watch a good movie together. It’ll take your mind off things.
Marc : *smiling for the first time* You know what? I feel better already. Thank you for coming.
Sophie : Of course! And promise me one thing: you’ll never deal with your problems alone again, okay?
Marc : I promise! And… uh… I promise I’ll do the rehab too. I won’t push myself anymore.
Sophie : Perfect! Alright, now show me your kitchen. We’re going to prepare a feast!
Marc : With pleasure! And Sophie… really, thank you for everything. You’re a wonderful friend.
