Conversation about people’s behavior in crowds (pushing, lack of distance)

Thomas: Euh… tu veux dire quoi exactement ?
Thomas: Tu as juste quoi ?
Camille: Zut, tu as raison…
Thomas: Et alors ?
Camille: Ben rien, justement !
Camille: Exactement !
Camille: D’accord ! On donne l’exemple. Mais promets-moi de me dire si je dérape !
Thomas: Promis !

Camille: Phew! Finally out of that hell! Have you seen how people behave on the metro these days?
Thomas: Uh… what do you mean exactly? It was rush hour, it’s normal for it to be crowded, isn’t it?
Camille: Normal? Thomas, that man literally pushed me to get on before people had even gotten off! And that woman breathing down my neck…
Thomas: Yeah, that was kind of borderline. But hey, we all do the same, right? When we’re in a hurry…
Camille: What do you mean “we all do the same”? I wait for people to get off before I get on! It’s just basic manners!
Thomas: Well… not always, admit it! Last week you really shoved that woman to grab the last seat.
Camille: Uh, no! I just… rushed a little. That’s different from deliberately pushing people!
Thomas: If you say so… But admit that when public transport is packed, we all lose a little of our good manners.
Camille: Maybe, but there are limits! This morning a guy pressed up against me even though he clearly had plenty of room to step back.
Thomas: Ah, that’s unpleasant, I admit. But sometimes we have no choice, we’re packed in like sardines!
Camille: Exactly! When you don’t have a choice, you can at least apologize, say “sorry”, smile…
Thomas: Funny you should say that. Do you remember how you behaved when we missed the metro earlier?
Camille: What do you mean?
Thomas: Well, you pushed that young man to try to get onto the train even though the doors were already closing!
Camille: But… but it was different! We were late for the movie! And I didn’t “push”, I just…
Thomas: You just what? Camille, be honest!
Camille: Okay, fine… I may have been a bit brusque. But he was dawdling in front of the door!
Thomas: There you go! You see, we all adapt our behavior to the circumstances.
Camille: Uh… it’s not the same! At least I said “excuse me” afterwards!
Thomas: After shoving him, yes! Exactly like everyone else.
Camille: Darn, you’re right… But still, some people really go overboard!
Thomas: I agree about that. That lady clinging to my backpack was a bit much!
Camille: And that man sneezing without covering his mouth! Yuck!
Thomas: Oh yes, that’s disgusting. Especially since COVID, people have been more careful.
Camille: Do you think we should say something in those cases?
Thomas: Honestly? I never dare. You never know who you might run into…
Camille: That’s true. The other day I asked someone to stop pushing so hard, and he looked at me like I was crazy!
Thomas: So?
Camille: Well, nothing, actually! He just kept going even harder. I felt like I was invisible.
Thomas: The problem is that in the city, we all become a bit anonymous. We behave differently.
Camille: Exactly! In my hometown, people would never push like that on the bus.
Thomas: Yeah… or maybe there’s never enough people to create that kind of situation!
Camille: Huh? What are you implying?
Thomas: Well, it’s easy to be polite when there’s room! The real test is the Paris metro at rush hour.
Camille: Okay, you have a point. But we could still make an effort, couldn’t we?
Thomas: Yes, of course. Hey, next time we take the metro together, shall we be mindful of our behavior?
Camille: Okay! We’ll set an example. But promise me you’ll tell me if I slip up!
Thomas: Promise! You too, okay?
Camille: It’s a deal! Come on, let’s go, or we’ll miss the beginning of the film.
Thomas: Hang on, look at that line for the escalators… Do we take the stairs or do what everyone else does?
Camille: Uh… escalators are faster, aren’t they?
