Figure-toi que j’ai complètement arrêté l’escalade.
Sophie: Ah bon ?
Thomas: C’est vrai, tu as déménagé ! Comment ça se passe ?
Sophie: Super bien !
Sophie: Exactement ! Maintenant, je me suis mise au jardinage. Tu imagines ? Moi qui détestais me salir les mains !
Thomas: Sans blague ? Et ça te plaît ?
Sophie: J’adore !
Ça me détend complètement.
Sophie: N’importe quoi !
Sophie: Exactement ! Mais au final, on s’en fiche ! L’important, c’est d’être épanoui.
Thomas: Tu as raison.
Thomas: Parfait ! On pourrait faire ça samedi prochain ?
Sophie: Avec plaisir !
Thomas: D’accord ! Et moi de goûter tes légumes bio !
English translation
Sophie and Thomas, two long-standing friends, meet in a café after several months apart. They are both in their forties and begin to discuss the changes in their lives, notably their new interests, which have evolved with age.
DIALOGUE
Sophie: Thomas! It’s been ages since we last saw each other! How are you?
Thomas: Sophie! Uh… I’m fine, thanks! It’s true, we haven’t seen each other for… what, six months?
Sophie: At least! Tell me, what have you been up to? Are you still climbing every weekend?
Thomas: Ah well… actually, no! Believe it or not, I’ve completely given up climbing.
Sophie: Oh really? But come on, that was your passion! You used to talk about nothing else!
Thomas: Well, you know, at forty-two the body doesn’t keep up like it used to. And… I’ve discovered something else.
Sophie: Oh? Tell me about it! What’s got you interested now?
Thomas: Well, you might laugh, but… I’ve taken up cooking!
Sophie: Cooking? You? But you didn’t even know how to cook pasta properly!
Thomas: Well, yes I have! I took classes, and now I spend my weekends testing new recipes. It’s become a real passion!
Sophie: Great! Mine have changed quite a bit since we moved to the countryside.
Thomas: That’s right, you moved! How’s it going?
Sophie: Really great! But that also means no more late-night clubbing or concerts until three in the morning!
Thomas: Haha! True – that really wasn’t something for us anymore, anyway…
Sophie: Exactly! I’ve taken up gardening. Can you imagine? Me, who used to hate getting my hands dirty!
Thomas: No kidding? Do you like it?
Sophie: I love it! There’s something very soothing about watching your own vegetables grow. And it’s perfect for unwinding after work.
Thomas: Funny, it’s the same for me with cooking! It completely relaxes me.
Sophie: Actually, we become more… uh… how to put it… homebodies as we get older, don’t we?
Thomas: Yes, but in a good way! We appreciate the simple pleasures more.
Sophie: By the way, do you know what else I’m into now? History! I’m devouring books about the Renaissance.
Thomas: Oh really? But you hated history in high school!
Sophie: I know! But now I have more perspective and more maturity to understand what’s at stake.
Thomas: That’s exactly how I feel! Before, I didn’t have the patience for quiet activities.
Sophie: And have you stayed in touch with your climbing club?
Thomas: Uh… well, actually, it’s a bit awkward. They accused me of giving up so easily.
Sophie: Oh darn! Don’t they understand that people can change?
Thomas: Apparently not. Especially Marc, do you remember him? He says I’m “getting soft.”
Sophie: Nonsense! It’s normal to change interests! My high school friends think I’m weird because I have a vegetable garden.
Thomas: People have a hard time accepting that someone can reinvent themselves, huh?
Sophie: Exactly! But in the end, who cares! What’s important is to be fulfilled.
Thomas: You’re right. Besides, if you want, I could cook the vegetables from your garden for you!
Sophie: Oh, what a great idea! And I’ll bring you my cherry tomatoes, they’re delicious!
Thomas: Perfect! Could we do that next Saturday?
Sophie: With pleasure! You see, our new hobbies are bringing us closer after all!
Thomas: That’s true! And it’s much more rewarding than our old outings…
Sophie: So, shall we say Saturday then? I can’t wait to see your cooking skills!
Thomas: All right! And I’ll get to taste your organic vegetables!
