Conscious nutritional choices as a long-term strategy

Sophie : Ah bon ?
Thomas : Trois mois ! Chouette, c’est long…
Thomas : Ouais, tu as raison…
On commence quand ?
Thomas : Parfait ! Merci Sophie, tu me sauves la vie… littéralement !

DIALOGUE

Sophie : Hi Thomas! It’s good to see you. You look… uh, how can I put it… a bit tired, aren’t you?
Thomas : Ah Sophie, hi! Yeah, I have to admit I haven’t been at my best lately. That’s exactly why I wanted to see you.
Sophie : Oh really? Tell me about it. You know you can tell me anything.
Thomas : So… my doctor had me do some tests last week and, uh… let’s say the results aren’t great. High cholesterol, a bit of diabetes starting to show…
Sophie : Oh my goodness! But Thomas, you’re only 40! What happened?
Thomas : Well, you know me… between business meals, the ready-made meals in the evening because I get home late, weekends at my parents’ where we eat everything… I’ve completely neglected my diet.
Sophie : Hey, don’t you realize this is exactly the kind of situation you can avoid with a more thoughtful approach?
Thomas : Exactly! That’s why I’m turning to you for help. Can you help me… what do you call it again… make conscious choices?
Sophie : Of course! But first, tell me: are you really ready to change your habits for the long term? Because this isn’t about a three-week diet, you know.
Thomas : Oh yes, I understand that perfectly! My doctor was very clear: either I change the way I eat now, or I’m at serious risk in ten years.
Sophie : Perfect! Okay, first question: what do you typically eat in a day?
Thomas : Um… in the morning, often nothing or a coffee with a croissant in a hurry. At lunchtime, usually at a restaurant with clients – so starter, main course, dessert, wine… In the evening, well… frozen pizza or takeaway sushi.
Sophie : Goodness! Thomas, do you realize you eat practically no vegetables or fruit?
Thomas : Yes, yes, there are tomatoes on my pizza! *laughs*
Sophie : *smiles* Very funny! But seriously, we’re going to have to rethink all of that. The idea is to create a way of eating that is both healthy AND compatible with your lifestyle.
Thomas : Yes, but the thing is, I really don’t have the time to cook every evening…
Sophie : Hold on, who said you have to cook every night? You have to be clever! For example, on Sundays you can prepare meal bases for the whole week.
Thomas : Ah? How does that work in practice?
Sophie : Well, you cook a large batch of quinoa and brown rice, chop vegetables, portion out proteins… And there you go! During the week you just have to assemble everything.
Thomas : Hey, that’s not bad! But what about business meals – what am I supposed to do? I can’t tell my clients, “Sorry, I only eat seeds”!
Sophie : *laughs* No! The idea of conscious choices is precisely to adapt to each situation. At a restaurant, you can very well choose grilled fish with vegetables instead of a rib steak with fries.
Thomas : Hmm… and what about wine then? Because, well, business meals without wine feel weird…
Sophie : Listen, we’re not going to revolutionize your social life! One or two glasses of wine now and then won’t kill you. The important thing is the overall balance.
Thomas : Okay, but… uh… how long does it take to see results?
Sophie : Well, you’ll have to be patient! The first effects – more energy, better sleep – you’ll notice them after two to three weeks. For blood tests, expect about three months.
Thomas : Three months! Great, that’s a long time…
Sophie : Thomas, it took you years to get into this state! You’re not going to fix everything in fifteen days. But trust me, once you’ve found the rhythm, it becomes natural.
Thomas : Yeah, you’re right… By the way, can I still go out to restaurants on weekends with my girlfriend?
Sophie : Of course! Social life is part of the balance. The idea is to make informed choices, not to deprive yourself of all pleasure.
Thomas : OK… Uh, one last slightly awkward question: how much is it going to cost me to eat “organic” and “healthy”?
Sophie : Ah! That’s a common misconception! Admittedly, some organic products are more expensive, but if you cook more and avoid ready-made meals, it balances out in the end.
Thomas : Really?
Sophie : And besides, you should see it as an investment in your future health. Would you rather pay a little more for your food now or a lot more for your medication in ten years?
Thomas : Now that you put it that way… OK, I’m convinced! When do we start?
Sophie : Starting this weekend! I’ll make you a shopping list and a few simple recipes. And shall we meet in two weeks to check in?
Thomas : Perfect! Thanks, Sophie, you’re saving my life… literally!
Sophie : *smiles* Come on, let’s get started on a new, healthier life!
