Complaining about daily fatigue and lack of time

DIALOGUE

Marie: Ah, Thomas ! Enfin, je peux souffler un peu… Quelle journée !
Thomas: Tu me dis !
Thomas: Pareil !
Marie: Et bien sûr, tu as dit oui…
Thomas: Ben ouais !
Thomas: Tu as raison.

English translation

Marie and Thomas meet in a café near their office after a long day at work. They are both exhausted and take the opportunity to relax and talk about their daily struggles to balance work and personal life.

DIALOGUE

Marie: Ah, Thomas! Finally, I can catch my breath a bit… What a day!
Thomas: Tell me about it! I feel like I’ve been running around everywhere since this morning. I’m completely exhausted.
Marie: Same here. Between meetings, urgent files and phone calls… I didn’t even have time to have a proper lunch.
Thomas: Seriously? Me neither! I just wolfed down a sandwich in front of my computer. That’s no way to live…
Marie: And the worst part is that when I get home, I still have a thousand things to do. Grocery shopping, cleaning, making dinner… Ugh, it never ends!
Thomas: I totally get you! Last night I fell asleep on the couch in front of the TV. My girlfriend wasn’t thrilled, huh!
Marie: Oh? Was she mad at you?
Thomas: Well, let’s say she’s starting to get fed up with me being wiped out all the time. She says we don’t do anything together anymore.
Marie: Uh… it’s true that it’s not easy to make time for your relationship with this hectic pace.
Thomas: Exactly! And you, how do you handle things with your husband?
Marie: Oh, it was a disaster! Last Saturday we’d planned to go to the cinema. Result: I canceled at the last minute because I had some work to finish.
Thomas: No! Darn… Was he upset?
Marie: You bet! He was furious. He told me I didn’t know how to switch off anymore, that I’d become obsessed with work.
Thomas: Ouch… That’s hard to hear.
Marie: The problem is he’s not entirely wrong. I feel like a prisoner of this constant race against the clock.
Thomas: What bothers me most are the commutes. Two hours a day on public transport! I feel like I’m wasting my life.
Marie: Oh yes, you live far away! I’m lucky, I live a twenty-minute walk away.
Thomas: No kidding! But wait, I have an idea… What if we tried to negotiate working from home once a week?
Marie: Oh, that’s not a bad idea! It would save us time and we’d be less stressed.
Thomas: Exactly! Besides, I’d be more efficient at home, without the constant interruptions from the office.
Marie: But I don’t know if our boss will agree… You know how strict he is about people being in the office.
Thomas: Yeah, it’s true he’s a bit old-school about that. But we can always try, can’t we?
Marie: Mmh… And besides, we need to learn to say no too. I accept everything I’m asked.
Thomas: Same here! The other day, they dumped another urgent file on me when I was already swamped.
Marie: And of course, you said yes…
Thomas: Well, yeah! I don’t dare say no; I’m afraid it’ll be held against me.
Marie: I understand, but at this rate, we’re going to end up snapping!
Thomas: You’re right. Besides, my sister always tells me, “Thomas, you can’t be everywhere at once!”
Marie: Your sister is right! As for me, my mother keeps telling me I’ll get sick if I keep going like this.
Thomas: She might be right… Hey, what if we set ourselves some goals? Like, finish on time at least three times a week?
Marie: Good idea! And let’s give ourselves a proper lunch break, not just a sandwich wolfed down in a hurry.
Thomas: Deal! And could we get together like that from time to time to unwind?
Marie: With pleasure! It feels good to talk to someone who understands. Come on, shall we keep each other motivated?
Thomas: Let’s do this! We’re going to take back control of our lives, by golly!
Marie: Exactly! Right, I’m off, otherwise I’ll be getting home late again… My husband will be grumbling!
Thomas: Go on, get going! I’ll finish my coffee and head home too. See you tomorrow!
Marie: See you tomorrow! And don’t forget: no overtime this week!
