DIALOGUE
Mathilde: Salut Lucas ! Tu as l’air crevé… Ça va ?
Lucas: Euh, salut Mathilde !
Lucas: Alors, voyons… Lundi j’ai cours jusqu’à 17h, puis un élève de 18h à 19h30. Mardi, euh… mardi c’est plus calme ! Et toi ?
Mathilde: Mardi ça marche ! Je finis à 16h. On pourrait se retrouver à la BU vers 17h ?
Lucas: Parfait !
Toi tu l’as fait ?
Lucas: Une fois, oui.
Lucas: De rien ! Allez, courage pour cette semaine ! Ciao !
English translation
Mathilde, a second-year psychology student, meets up with her friend Lucas at the university café. Both juggle their studies and part-time jobs. Mathilde works as a waitress on weekends, while Lucas gives private math lessons after his classes. They meet to share their experiences and help each other organize their busy schedules.
DIALOGUE
Mathilde: Hi Lucas! You look exhausted… Are you okay?
Lucas: Uh, hi Mathilde! Yeah, I’m okay, but I have to admit I’m starting to get overwhelmed. Between the midterms coming up and my students all wanting extra lessons…
Mathilde: Ah, I get you! I’m struggling too right now. The restaurant is asking me to work more hours on weekends, but I have a presentation to prepare for Monday.
Lucas: Well, that’s funny – we’re in the same boat! How do you manage to stay organized?
Mathilde: Well, I try to plan my week on Sunday evenings. I write everything down in my planner: classes, work, studying… But sometimes it all goes haywire!
Lucas: Oh really? I use an app on my phone, but uh… I have to admit I don’t always check it!
Mathilde: Haha! The problem is my boss at the restaurant sometimes gives me extra shifts at the last minute. Last week I had to cancel a study session with Claire.
Lucas: Ugh, that’s annoying! It’s the other way around for me – my students are the ones who cancel at the last minute. Yesterday I’d set aside two hours for a math lesson, and bam! A text an hour before: “Sorry, I can’t make it.”
Mathilde: Oh dear! How do you manage financially? Because without this job, I can’t pay my rent…
Lucas: Same here! My parents help me out a bit, but private tutoring is really necessary. The thing is, I mostly give lessons in the late afternoon, when I’m done at university.
Mathilde: That’s clever! I usually work on Friday nights and weekends. At least it doesn’t interfere too much with my weekday classes.
Lucas: Yeah, but your weekend’s basically dead then! Are you still able to study?
Mathilde: Uh… that’s where it gets complicated. I often get home late on Saturday nights, and on Sunday mornings I’m not in the mood to study. So I make up for it during the week, but it’s hard.
Lucas: Oh, I see… Hey, maybe we could organize something together? Like, set shared study slots?
Mathilde: Hey, that’s a good idea! That way we’ll motivate each other. When are you free this week?
Lucas: Well, let’s see… On Monday I have classes until 5 p.m., then I have a student from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, uh… Tuesday is quieter! And you?
Mathilde: Tuesday works! I finish at 4 p.m. Could we meet at the university library around 5 p.m.?
Lucas: Perfect! By the way, have you thought about talking to your professors about your situation? They can be understanding sometimes…
Mathilde: Hmm, not really… I’m afraid they’ll think I don’t take my studies seriously. Did you?
Lucas: Once, yes. I had a big problem with a student who insisted on having a lesson during my exams. I talked to my stats professor, and he gave me some tips on managing my time better.
Mathilde: Oh really? What did he tell you?
Lucas: Basically, don’t be afraid to say no sometimes, and make sure to keep study time and work time separate. No studying between two tutoring sessions, for example.
Mathilde: It’s true that I sometimes study during my break at the cafeteria… Maybe it’s not ideal!
Lucas: Exactly! He also advised me to prepare my tutoring sessions in advance so they don’t take up too much of my time every day.
Mathilde: Huh? You weren’t already preparing them?
Lucas: Well… not really! I used to just skim the plan before each session. Now I prepare everything the weekend beforehand – it’s more efficient.
Mathilde: Great! I’m going to try to ask for my shifts at the restaurant earlier. That way I can better plan my studying.
Lucas: Good idea! Oh, by the way, I almost forgot… Did you know the university offers scholarships for working students?
Mathilde: Oh no! Seriously? How does that work?
Lucas: You need to put together an application with your pay slips and everything. It’s not huge, but it can help. I’ll apply next week.
Mathilde: Great! Can you send me the info? Right, I have to run – I have a tutorial in ten minutes!
Lucas: No problem! I’ll send it to you tonight. See you Tuesday then, 5 p.m. at the university library!
Mathilde: Perfect! Thanks, Lucas, it felt good to talk about all of that. See you Tuesday!
Lucas: You’re welcome! Hang in there this week! Bye!
