Closing a difficult topic and moving on to lighter subjects

Thomas : Ben si, tu as raison.
Thomas : Oh Marie !
Thomas : Quoi ? Tu as eu un accident ? Mais pourquoi tu me dis ça maintenant ?
Oh là là, je vais me faire tuer !
Thomas : Ouais, toujours pareil !
Marie : Chouette ! Ça me dit bien ! Il y aura qui d’autre ?
Thomas : Ben, la bande habituelle : Sophie, Marc, Camille… Ah !
*rires*
Marie : *rires* D’accord !
Thomas : Tu as raison !

DIALOGUE

Marie : Listen, Thomas, I know how hard what you’re going through with Léa is, but… uh… don’t you think we could talk about something else? We’ve been dwelling on this for an hour.
Thomas : Yeah, you’re right. Sorry, I don’t realize I’m always repeating myself. It’s just that… never mind.
Marie : Hey, no, it’s normal! I’m not saying that to shut you up, it’s just that… well, we’re not going to change the world, either. And besides – I’ve got some great news to tell you!
Thomas : Oh really? Go on, tell me! I really need to hear something positive.
Marie : Guess what – I finally got my driver’s license! On the first try, no less!
Thomas : Seriously? That’s amazing! Congratulations! Uh… wait, didn’t you tell me you took it last week?
Marie : Yes, yes, but I didn’t really want to bring it up because… well, with your problems and everything, I thought it would be inappropriate to celebrate.
Thomas : Oh, Marie! But you should have told me! You’re completely crazy! We should’ve toasted it properly!
Marie : Well, actually, why don’t we make up for lost time? We could go for a drive! My parents lent me theirs for the weekend.
Thomas : Great! That would take my mind off things. What do you suggest? A little drive in the countryside?
Marie : Uh… actually, I have to admit I’m still a bit nervous behind the wheel. Couldn’t you drive instead? Just to get out of town?
Thomas : Ah! *laughs* Now that’s the world turned upside down! You, who insisted on getting your license so you could be independent!
Marie : Stop teasing me! It’s normal to be a bit anxious at first, isn’t it? And, uh… actually, yesterday I had a little fender-bender in the supermarket parking lot.
Thomas : What? You had an accident? But why are you telling me this now?
Marie : Well… it wasn’t really an accident! I just scraped the door a bit on a post. My parents don’t know yet and… damn! I’m freaking out!
Thomas : *laughs* Sorry, I shouldn’t be laughing, but this is too funny! Miss “I’m going to be a perfect driver”!
Marie : Hey, that’s not funny! Can you help me or not? How am I supposed to tell my parents?
Thomas : Calm down! It’s not that bad. We can go see a mechanic tomorrow and get a discreet estimate. How much does a scratch like that usually cost?
Marie : No idea! Uh… do you think it could be expensive? Oh my God, I’m going to get killed!
Thomas : Well, it depends on how deep it is. But hey, friends always find a way. Remember when I broke my mom’s vase?
Marie : Oh yeah! You found exactly the same one at the flea market! But this is different, you can’t replace a car!
Thomas : No, but we can get it repaired discreetly. I have a friend who’s a mechanic, Julien, you know him. He’ll give us a friends’ discount.
Marie : Oh, that’s right! Julien! Is he still as nice? I haven’t seen him in ages.
Thomas : Yeah, same as always! By the way, he’s hosting a small get-together next Saturday. Want to come? It would do us good to see some people.
Marie : Great! I’m up for it! Who else will be there?
Thomas : Well, the usual crowd: Sophie, Marc, Camille… Ah! And he invited his new girlfriend too. A girl he apparently met on holiday.
Marie : Oh wow! Julien in a relationship? He who used to say he’d stay single his whole life! Uh… won’t it be weird for you to see a happy couple?
Thomas : *sigh* Well… I thought about it, but I guess I’ll have to get used to it, right? And besides, it might do me some good to see that love still exists!
Marie : There you go! That’s exactly the mindset we need! So, what are we going to do about my car then?
Thomas : We’ll call Julien in a little while, and we’ll stop by to see him tomorrow morning. And this afternoon, if you want, we’ll still go for a walk. On foot! *laughs*
Marie : *laughs* Okay! But first, let’s finish our coffees in peace. You know, it feels so good to talk about normal things!
Thomas : You’re right! Thanks, Marie, you’re a true friend. So, tell me instead how your driving test went!
Marie : Ah! Now that’s a story! Get this: the examiner was in a murderous mood and…
