Argument about who’s hogging the TV remote

Marc : Mais enfin, Emma !
Emma : Eh bien tu attendras ! Il me reste encore vingt minutes d’épisode.
Marc : Vingt minutes ? Mais le match aura déjà commencé ! Allez, sois sympa…
Emma : Désolée, mais c’est non ! D’ailleurs, tu regardes toujours tes matchs. Hier encore tu as monopolisé la télé pendant deux heures !
Marc : Bon sang, Emma ! Tu es vraiment têtue ! Papa ! Maman !
Emma : Oh là là, qu’est-ce que tu es gamin ! Tu appelles tes parents maintenant ?
Marc : Ben oui ! Puisque tu ne veux rien entendre !
Emma : Attends, attends…
Marc : Hein ? Tu veux regarder le foot avec moi ?
Emma : Pourquoi pas ? Ça m’intéresse peut-être, au fond. Mais à une condition !
Marc : Laquelle ?
Emma : Tu me laisses finir mon épisode d’abord, et après on regarde ton match ensemble. Deal ?
Marc : Emma !

English translation

It’s Sunday evening in the Dubois family living room. Marc, 17, and his sister Emma, 15, are arguing over control of the remote control after dinner. Their parents are in the kitchen and the two teenagers want to watch different programmes on the living room TV.

DIALOGUE

Marc : Come on, Emma, hand me the remote! The football match starts in five minutes.
Emma : Oh no way! I was here first and I’m watching my show. You can just go watch your match in your room!
Marc : Uh… my TV’s been broken since Thursday, you know that! And it’s an important match, come on!
Emma : Too bad for you! I’ve been waiting all week to watch this episode. No way I’m missing the season finale!
Marc : Come on, Emma! That stupid show of yours you can watch on replay tomorrow. My match is live or nothing!
Emma : My “stupid thing”? Excuse me, but your ball rolling around on a field isn’t exactly high art either!
Marc : Come on, give me that remote! *He tries to grab it*
Emma : Don’t even think about it! *She hides the remote behind her back* Mom said we have to share!
Marc : Exactly! Sharing! That means I have the right to watch whatever I want too!
Emma : Well, you’ll wait! I’ve still got twenty minutes of the episode left.
Marc : Twenty minutes? But the match will already have started! Come on, be nice…
Emma : Sorry, but no! Besides, you always watch your matches. Just yesterday you monopolized the TV for two hours!
Marc : Yesterday it was different! And besides, you spend your life glued to your stupid shows!
Emma : They’re not stupid! At least my shows tell interesting stories!
Marc : Pfff… sappy romance stories, you mean! Come on, can’t we compromise?
Emma : What kind of compromise?
Marc : Um… you watch the last ten minutes and then I take the TV?
Emma : Ten minutes? But I’ll miss half the ending! No, sorry.
Marc : Good grief, Emma! You’re really stubborn! Dad! Mom!
Emma : Oh my, you’re such a kid! You’re calling your parents now?
Marc : Well, yes! Since you won’t listen to anything!
Emma : Wait, wait… *She thinks* What if we watched together? You explain your match to me and I’ll explain my show to you?
Marc : Huh? You want to watch football with me?
Emma : Why not? I might actually be interested, deep down. But on one condition!
Marc : Which one?
Emma : You let me finish my episode first, and then we’ll watch your match together. Deal?
Marc : Uh… okay, but do you promise you’ll actually watch the match? No phones during the game!
Emma : Promise! But you have to stop criticising my shows!
Marc : Deal ! *He sits down next to her* By the way, what’s your show about?
Emma : Ah! See? You’re interested! Okay, so watch closely, I’ll give you a summary…
Marc : Okay, but after that you have to let me explain the offside rule to you!
Emma : *Laughing* Oh my, what have I gotten myself into!
Marc : *Smiling too* Come on, at least pass me the remote so I can turn up the volume!
Emma : Oh no! I’m keeping the remote! You can never be trusted!
Marc : Emma! Don’t you trust me?
Emma : Not for a second! *She laughs* But hey, we’re going to have a great time tonight!
Marc : Yeah, actually… Hey, in the show, do your parents also fight over the remote?
Emma : *Laughing* No, but they have other problems! Shh now, it’s starting!
