Karim : Euh… oui, bonjour. Je m’appelle Karim. Je viens juste d’arriver du Maroc.
Sophie : Ah cool !
Tu as quel emploi du temps ?
Sophie : Ouf, tant mieux !

Karim : Ah bon ?
Karim : Tu crois ? Ça les intéresserait vraiment ?
Lucas : Mais bien sûr ! On adore découvrir de nouveaux trucs ici.
Sophie : Oh, j’y pense ! Tu habites où maintenant ?
Karim : Dans le 13ème arrondissement, avec ma famille.
Sophie : Perfect !
Lucas : Haha ! C’est un vrai labyrinthe au début ! Mais on s’habitue vite.
Sophie : Bon, la récré est presque finie. Karim, tu as quoi maintenant ?
Karim : Français… Ça me stresse un peu.
Sophie : Pourquoi ? Tu parles super bien !
Sophie : Exactement ! Et puis Madame Martin est très compréhensive. Elle sait que tu viens d’arriver.
Karim : Vous êtes vraiment sympas, les gars. Ça me rassure beaucoup.
Sophie : Allez, on y va !
Karim : Promis ! Merci pour tout, vraiment.
Lucas : De rien ! Bienvenue dans la famille !
English translation
At an international school in Paris, Sophie, the class representative in her final year, meets Karim, a new student who has just arrived from Morocco. It’s his first day and he seems a little lost in the corridors. Sophie decides to help him integrate into his new French school.
DIALOGUE
Sophie : Hi! You’re the new student, right? I saw you this morning during roll call. I’m Sophie.
Karim : Um… yes, hello. My name is Karim. I’ve just arrived from Morocco.
Sophie : Ah, cool! Welcome to our high school! So, how’s it going so far?
Karim : Well… it’s a bit complicated, I must say. I’m getting lost in the corridors and I don’t know anyone.
Sophie : Oh, that’s normal! I was totally lost too when I first arrived here. What’s your timetable?
Karim : Wait, let me see… I have maths now, but I don’t know where it is. Room B204?
Sophie : Oh no! It’s on the second floor, building B. Come on, I’ll come with you. By the way, which school system were you in in Morocco?
Karim : I was in a French school, fortunately! Otherwise, it would have been even harder.
Sophie : Phew, that’s a relief! Because the French system isn’t always straightforward. Which stream are you in?
Karim : Science, like you, I think?
Sophie : Exactly! We might have classes together then. Here, that’s your classroom. Uh… do you want me to introduce you to a few friends at break?
Karim : Oh yes, that would be great! Thank you very much.
Sophie : You’re welcome! Let’s meet in the courtyard at 10:15, okay?

[At break]
Sophie : Karim! Over here! So, how did it go in maths?
Karim : Meh… The teacher spoke really fast and I didn’t catch everything. Also, there are lots of expressions I don’t know.
Sophie : Oh yes, Mr. Dubois, he always talks a mile a minute! Come on, come with me – I’ll introduce you to my friends.
Sophie : Guys! This is Karim, the new guy I was telling you about.
Lucas : Hey man! So, where exactly are you from?
Karim : From Rabat, the capital of Morocco.
Lucas : Cool! That must be quite a change from here, huh?
Karim : Totally! For starters, it’s much colder! And everything’s different…
Sophie : By the way, Karim, do you already have your school planner? And your canteen card?
Karim : Uh… no, not yet. What do I have to do?
Sophie : Oh dear! You need to go to the school office quickly. Otherwise you won’t be able to eat at lunchtime!
Karim : Oh really? It was easier in Morocco…
Lucas : Don’t worry, we’ll explain it to you. Here, you always have to fill out paperwork!
Sophie : Exactly! And don’t forget to sign up for after-school activities if you’re interested.
Karim : What sort of activities?
Lucas : Well, there’s football, drama, music… I’m part of the high school orchestra.
Karim : Oh! I play the oud; it’s a traditional Moroccan instrument.
Sophie : Great! Maybe you could suggest that to the music teacher?
Karim : Do you think so? Would they really be interested?
Lucas : Of course! We love discovering new things here.
Sophie : Oh, I was just thinking! Where do you live now?
**Karim : In the 13th arrondissement, with my family.
Sophie : Perfect! Me too! We could go home together after class if you want.
Karim : That would be cool! I’m still having trouble with the Paris Metro…
Lucas : Haha! It’s a real maze at first! But you get used to it quickly.
Sophie : Okay, recess is almost over. Karim, what do you have now?
Karim : French… It stresses me out a bit.
Sophie : Why? You speak really well!
Karim : Yes, but French literary analysis isn’t my strong suit… What if I say something stupid?
Lucas : Listen, everyone says silly things! Even us! The important thing is to participate.
Sophie : Exactly! And besides, Mrs. Martin is very understanding. She knows you’ve just arrived.
Karim : You guys are really nice. That makes me feel a lot better.
Sophie : Come on, let’s go! And don’t hesitate at all if you have any questions, okay!
Karim : I promise! Thanks for everything, really.
Lucas : You’re welcome! Welcome to the family!
