A conversation with children about holiday travel plans

Emma : Lucas ! C’est pas gentil de dire ça !
Sylvie : Emma a raison.
On serait… treize à table !
Emma : Treize ?
Lucas : Allez maman !
Lucas : Promis ! T’es la meilleure, maman !
Emma : Merci maman ! J’ai déjà hâte !
Sylvie : Bon, on verra bien…

English translation

It’s the end of November and Sylvie is discussing plans for the Christmas holidays with her two children, Lucas (15) and Emma (12). Sylvie : Okay, kids, we need to talk seriously about the Christmas holidays. We have to book before the end of the week if we want to go anywhere.
Lucas : Awesome! Are we really going away this year? Last year we stayed at home…
Emma : I’d love to go to the mountains! We could go skiing and there might be snow for Christmas!
Sylvie : That’s a possibility, sweetheart. But Dad would prefer that we go see Grandma in Provence. She’s been inviting us for months.
Lucas : Uh… Provence? But nothing’s going to happen there! And besides, Grandma always makes us eat weird stuff…
Emma : Lucas! That’s not nice to say!
Sylvie : Emma’s right. Besides, Grandma cooks very well. There’s also the Brittany option with Uncle Marc and Aunt Sophie.
Lucas : Oh no, not Brittany in December! It’s going to rain all the time and we’ll be bored to death!
Emma : Well, I like Brittany. And besides, there are the cousins! We always have fun with Théo and Manon.
Sylvie : Actually, I spoke with Aunt Sophie on the phone yesterday. They’d like us to come, but… um… there’s a small problem.
Lucas : Oh? What kind of problem?
Sylvie : Well, they’ve also invited Aunt Monique’s family with her four children. We’d be… thirteen at the table!
Emma : Thirteen? Where are we going to sleep? And it’s going to be total chaos!
Lucas : Yeah, and Aunt Monique’s kids are unbearable! Remember at Easter?
Sylvie : Alright, alright… I see this option doesn’t really appeal to you. What about Provence, then?
Emma : Mom, honestly, I was really dreaming of snow for Christmas. It’s magical, isn’t it? And we never get any!
Lucas : Yeah, Emma’s not wrong. And up in the mountains we can do cool stuff: skiing, sledding, hiking…
Sylvie : Alright, but you know that going to the mountains at Christmas is expensive. And Dad isn’t sure he’ll be able to take all his time off.
Emma : What do you mean? He said he’d take two weeks!
Sylvie : Actually, I forgot to tell you… There have been changes at the office. He’d only be able to leave from the 24th to January 2nd.
Lucas : Oh no! That’s so annoying! I had planned to leave with you on the 20th!
Emma : Wait, does that mean we can’t go away for long?
Sylvie : No, sweetie. At most ten days. So is it really worth going to the mountains?
Lucas : Uh… maybe we could compromise? Like, a few days in the mountains and the rest at Grandma’s?
Emma : Hey, that’s not a bad idea! We’d have the snow AND the family!
Sylvie : Hmm, that’s an idea… But it complicates the planning. And the reservations, and the luggage…
Lucas : Come on, Mom! That would be awesome! Three or four days of skiing, and then we head down to the South!
Emma : Yes! And that way, Grandma won’t be disappointed! You know how much she wants to see us for New Year’s.
Sylvie : You might be right… But I need to check with Dad to see if it’s doable budget-wise.
Lucas : We can get cheap accommodation in the mountains! Like a gîte or something like that!
Emma : And we don’t need to rent skis for everyone. I can just go sledding!
Sylvie : Okay, listen, I’ll talk it over with your father tonight. But don’t get your hopes up, okay?
Lucas : Come on, Mom! Make an effort! It’s Christmas, after all!
Emma : Please! We’ll be on our best behavior and we’ll help you organize everything!
Sylvie : All right, all right! I’ll see what we can do. But promise me you won’t sulk if it doesn’t work out!
Lucas : I promise! You’re the best, Mom!
Emma : Thanks, Mom! I can’t wait!
Sylvie : Well, we’ll see… In the meantime, you can start thinking about what you want to bring. And Lucas, make sure you let your friends know you might not be able to make it to Tom’s party.
Lucas : Oh right, that’s true! Well, too bad for Tom. Family vacation is more important!
