A conversation about whether the relationship should be “serious”

Tu as quelques minutes ?
On sort ensemble, non ?
Tu me fais flipper là…
Tu veux dire quoi exactement ?
Zut alors !
Tu as quel âge déjà ?
On va doucement…
Léa: Ça me va !
Tu me dois bien ça après ton petit numéro !
Thomas: *en riant* D’accord, d’accord ! Allez viens, “ma copine”…

Léa and Thomas have been dating for six months. After a romantic dinner at their favorite restaurant, they walk along the Seine. Thomas seems preoccupied and Léa feels that he has something important to tell her about their relationship.

DIALOGUE
Thomas: Léa… uh, I’d like to talk about the two of us. Do you have a few minutes?
Léa: Of course! You seem really off tonight. What’s going on?
Thomas: Well… we’ve been seeing each other for six months now and… I was wondering exactly where the two of us stand.
Léa: What do you mean, “where we stand”? We’re dating, aren’t we? I thought that was clear…
Thomas: Yes, but… are we really a couple? I mean, a real couple, you know. Not just… how to put it… friends who go out together from time to time.
Léa: Really? I thought we were already a “real couple”! You’re freaking me out…
Thomas: No, no, wait! I’m not saying that to dump you, okay! On the contrary… Actually, I’d like things to be more serious between us.
Léa: More serious? What exactly do you mean? That we should get married tomorrow?
Thomas: Uh, no, not so fast! But… I don’t know… maybe we could be exclusive, just the two of us. Not see other people anymore.
Léa: Uh… Thomas, I haven’t been seeing anyone else this whole time! Have you?
Thomas: No! Well… not really. Just… well, I admit I still use dating apps, but it’s out of habit!
Léa: What?! You’re still on Tinder? Seriously?
Thomas: Listen, it’s not what you think! I just swipe mindlessly, I’m not meeting anyone!
Léa: Nonsense! And I thought we were on the same wavelength… Darn it!
Thomas: We are, though! That’s exactly why I want us to make things official. So you can be my girlfriend… officially.
Léa: Your “official” girlfriend? What did you think I was until now? Your babysitter?
Thomas: Come on, don’t take it the wrong way… I’m terrible at expressing this kind of stuff, you know that.
Léa: Yeah… So what would actually change if we were “official”?
Thomas: Well… we could introduce ourselves as boyfriend and girlfriend to our friends, to our families… My parents would like to meet you, by the way.
Léa: Your parents? Oh, that’s new! Last week you said they were way too annoying.
Thomas: It’s true they’re annoying sometimes, but… they matter to me. And you matter too, so…
Léa: Hmm… And my parents – are you interested in meeting them? Because my mum won’t stop asking when she’ll meet my “mysterious Thomas”.
Thomas: Uh… yes, of course! I mean, if they’re nice…
Léa: “‘If they’re nice’?! Wow, you don’t beat around the bush!”
Thomas: Sorry, I’m a bit nervous… It’s the first time I’ve had this conversation with someone.
Léa: Oh really? How old are you again? Twenty-eight and you’ve never had a serious girlfriend?
Thomas: I have, but… not like with you. With you it’s different. I feel something… strong.
Léa: Great then! I care about you too, you know. But I need to know that you’re sure of your choice.
Thomas: I’m sure! Besides, I deleted Tinder from my phone this morning.
Léa: Only this morning?! Are you kidding me?!
Thomas: No, it’s true! Look… *he takes out his phone* No more dating apps, I promise!
Léa: Okay, fine… But I have one condition: we take things slowly, okay? No way are we moving in together within a week!
Thomas: Of course! We’ll take it slow… For starters, maybe we could see each other more often? Like three or four times a week?
Léa: That works for me! And we’ll have that famous meeting with the parents in a few months, when we’re both really sure.
Thomas: Deal! And… um… does that mean I can call you “my girlfriend” now?
Léa: *laughing* Yes, my “boyfriend”! But watch out, no more messing around with other girls, understood?
Thomas: I promise! *he kisses her* Thank you for giving me this chance, Léa.
Léa: You’re welcome… But next time we have to talk about important stuff, don’t freak me out like that!
Thomas: Noted! Well, now, my very official girlfriend… how about we go for a drink to celebrate?
Léa: With pleasure! But you’re the one paying, okay… You owe me that after your little stunt!
Thomas: *laughing* Okay, okay! Come on, “my girlfriend”…
