A conversation about what each person considers a “good relationship” in the long term

Thomas : Ah, tu veux dire… nos projets à long terme ?
Thomas : Attends, attends…

Claire and Thomas, who have been together for six months, meet in a Parisian café to discuss their future. They both want to know whether they share the same vision of a lasting and fulfilling relationship.

DIALOGUE

Claire : So Thomas, we’ve been dating for a while and… um, I’d like us to talk about what we really expect from a serious relationship.
Thomas : Ah, you mean… our long-term plans? Well, yeah, it’s true we never really talked about them in depth.
Claire : Exactly! For me, for example, I think a good relationship is, above all, mutual trust. Without that, you can’t build anything solid, you know?
Thomas : Ah, I completely agree with that! But for me, independence matters too. I mean… each person should keep their friends, their passions, their identity, you know.
Claire : Funny you should say that! I tend to think that, on the contrary, we should share everything. Well, almost everything. Going out, vacations, even some friends…
Thomas : Uh… really? Don’t you think that’s a bit… suffocating? I mean, I need my football nights with the guys, for example.
Claire : But I’m not saying you should stop! It’s just… well, sometimes I’d like you to invite me to come along too, you know.
Thomas : Oh really? But Claire, you hate football! Last time, you spent the whole evening on your phone.
Claire : Yes, but… that’s the point. A good relationship, for me, is when we want to do everything together, even the things we don’t necessarily like.
Thomas : Hmm, I see what you mean, but… well, I think we should respect each other’s differences. Great, we don’t like the same things!
Claire : Okay, but then how do we build something together if we’re each living our own lives?
Thomas : But we don’t each live our own lives! We share lots of moments, we tell each other about our days, we make plans… That’s the balance, isn’t it?
Claire : Maybe… And when it comes to important decisions? Like, if we decide to move in together one day, who chooses the apartment? Who decides on the decor?
Thomas : Well… together, right? We talk about it until we find a compromise that suits both of us.
Claire : Yeah… Except I hate compromises! I feel like, in the end, nobody’s really satisfied.
Thomas : Oh come on! But how do you see things, then? Does one person decide for the other?
Claire : No, not at all! But I think we should have the same tastes, the same desires. That way, there’s no need for compromise.
Thomas : Uh… Claire, that sounds a bit utopian to me. We can’t be identical about everything, can we?
Claire : But we can try to get closer! You could learn to like the theatre, and I… well, football, maybe?
Thomas : Ah… I’m not really sure. I like our differences. That’s what makes our relationship interesting!
Claire : Huh? But our differences are also what make us argue! Like with our vacation last summer…
Thomas : Oh yes, that’s true… You absolutely wanted to go to the seaside, and I to the mountains. In the end, we spent a week at each.
Claire : Exactly! And neither you nor I were really happy. You can see that compromises don’t work!
Thomas : Wait, wait… I loved our vacation! Even the week at the seaside, in the end.
Claire : Seriously? But you complained the whole time! “It’s too hot,” “I’m bored on the beach”…
Thomas : Okay, at first, yeah… But seeing how happy you were made me happy too. Isn’t that what love is?
Claire : Oh… that’s sweet of you. But then, for you, a good relationship is… what exactly?
Thomas : Well, that’s exactly it! It’s being able to make an effort for the other person while staying true to yourself. And you, in the end?
Claire : Um… I think I’m starting to understand your point of view. Maybe I idealize perfect things too much…
Thomas : Hey, there’s nothing wrong with that! But we can be happy together even if we’re not clones, you know.
Claire : Yeah… Deep down, the important thing is that we love each other and respect who we truly are, right?
Thomas : Exactly! And that we communicate, like we’re doing right now. That’s already a good start, isn’t it?
Claire : Great then! Maybe we’re not so different after all when it comes to the important things!
