Julie: Attendez, on arrive à République. Il y a moins de monde maintenant.
Lisa: Parfait !
Julie: Trois jours ? Ben dis donc ! Pas étonnant que ça sente !
Lisa: Je suis vraiment confuse…
Lisa: *riant* Merci, ça me rassure !
English translation
The scene takes place on a crowded bus in the middle of rush hour, on a hot summer day. Lisa, a student, gets on the bus with her large gym bag after a workout. She finds herself squeezed between Marc, a businessman, and Julie, a young woman on her way to work. The atmosphere quickly becomes uncomfortable because of the heat and the smells inside the vehicle.
DIALOGUE
Lisa: Excuse me, can I get through? My bag is a bit bulky…
Marc: Of course, but… uh… are you coming from the gym?
Lisa: Yes, why? Is there a problem?
Julie: Well… let’s just say it’s a bit noticeable, huh.
Lisa: Oh dear! I’m sorry! I completely forgot to shower after my Bikram yoga class.
Marc: Bikram yoga? What’s that?
Lisa: It’s yoga in a room heated to 40°C. So you sweat a lot.
Julie: Oh really? And you got on the bus like that?
Lisa: I was late for my French class… Darn, I didn’t think of it!
Marc: *whispering* My God, that smell… I’m going to be sick.
Julie: Shh! She’ll hear you!
Lisa: I heard that, you know. Listen, I’ll get off at the next stop if it’s really bothering you.
Elderly passenger: *approaching* What’s going on here? It looks like there’s an argument.
Marc: No, no, not an argument. It’s just that… how to put it politely…
Julie: Mr. Martin! Well, what a coincidence!
Elderly passenger (Mr. Martin): Julie! My little neighbor! Are you going to the office?
Lisa: Do you know each other?
Julie: Yes, he’s my neighbor across the hall. Mr. Martin, this is Lisa. She has a little… uh… problem with body odor after exercising.
Mr. Martin: Ah! My dear little one, that reminds me of my time in the military! The smell of sweat doesn’t bother me at all.
Marc: Good for you, but I have a sensitive stomach in the morning…
Lisa: Okay, I’ve got an idea! I have some deodorant in my bag. Can I put some on?
Julie: Uh… on the bus? Isn’t that a bit weird?
Lisa: Would you prefer that I stay like this?
Marc: No! I mean… go ahead!
Mr. Martin: Here, I’ve got some scented wipes in my pocket. My wife always gives me some.
Lisa: That’s very kind of you! Are you sure?
Julie: Hold on, we’re arriving at République. There are fewer people now.
Lisa: Perfect! *wiping herself with the wipes* Is that better like this?
Marc: Yes, it’s… it’s much better, thank you.
Mr. Martin: And your gym bag, my dear? It still smells a bit strong…
Lisa: Oh no! My workout gear has been in there for three days! I’d completely forgotten!
Julie: Three days? Wow! No wonder it smells!
Lisa: I’m really embarrassed… This is the first time this has happened to me.
Marc: Well, it’s not that bad. We’ve all had embarrassing moments.
Julie: That’s true! Once, I spilled my coffee on a man on the subway.
Mr. Martin: And I forgot to take off my slippers and went grocery shopping wearing them!
Lisa: *laughing* Thanks, that makes me feel better! Okay, I’m getting off at the next stop to go change.
Marc: There’s no need now. The wipes will be fine.
Julie: Besides, we’ll be at the end of the line soon anyway.
Lisa: You’re really nice. Next time I’ll take a shower first!
Mr. Martin: And don’t forget to wash your workout clothes regularly!
Lisa: I promise! And thanks again for the wipes.
Marc: By the way, where is your French class?
Lisa: At the Saint-Michel Institute, near the train station.
Julie: Ah! That’s where my sister works! Maybe you’re in Mrs. Dubois’s class?
Lisa: Exactly! Do you know her?
Julie: She’s my sister! *laughing* She’ll have a good laugh when I tell her this story!
Lisa: Oh no! You’re not going to tell her, are you?
Julie: *smiling* That depends… are you inviting me for a coffee after your classes?
Lisa: *laughing* Okay, it’s a deal! But after my shower this time!
All: *laughing together*
Mr. Martin: That’s how you turn an awkward situation into a new friendship!
