A conversation about holiday cleaning

Sophie : Ah mince !
Sophie : T’as raison ma chérie.
Sophie, tu vas me tuer !
Sophie : D’accord, d’accord ! Allez, on s’y met ?

English translation

It’s the week before Christmas and Sophie is preparing her home to welcome the whole family. She enlists her husband Thomas and their daughter Léa (16) to organize the preparations. Between the decorations, the cleaning and arranging of the guest rooms, everyone has their own ideas about the priorities…

DIALOGUE

Sophie : Okay, listen up, you two! We have exactly five days left before Grandma and Grandpa arrive, plus the uncles and cousins…
Thomas : Uh, Sophie, are you already getting stressed? The house is perfectly fine as it is, isn’t it?
Léa : Dad’s right, Mom, why do you get so worked up every year?
Sophie : All worked up? Have you seen the state of the living room? And the guest room that’s been a dumping ground for three months?
Thomas : Oh yeah, that… Well, we can tidy that up in two hours, can’t we?
Sophie : Two hours? Thomas, there are boxes up to the ceiling! And we have to bring out the fine china, clean the windows, vacuum everywhere…
Léa : I can take care of the decorations if you want. I saw some nice ideas on Pinterest.
Sophie : Great! But first, let’s clean up. Léa, can you start with your room? In case your cousin Clara sleeps over.
Léa : What? Clara in my room? But Mom, she snores!
Thomas : See, just like your father!
Léa : Very funny, Dad… And she snoops through my stuff!
Sophie : Okay, we’ll deal with that later. Thomas, will you take all these boxes down to the garage?
Thomas : Okay, okay. But I’m watching the match afterwards, alright? France-Germany, it’s important!
Sophie : The match? Oh no, no, no! After you’re done with the boxes, you clean the living-room windows.
Thomas : The windows? Oh come on, Sophie, nobody looks at the windows at Christmas!
Léa : Oh yes, Dad, Grandma sees everything! Last year she even noticed the dust on the chandelier.
Thomas : Good grief… Well, Léa, besides decorating, what else are you doing?
Léa : Uh… I’m tidying my room and helping Mom with the cooking?
Sophie : Exactly! We need to do the shopping tomorrow. I’ve prepared a list, but I’m afraid I forgot some things.
Thomas : Hang on, exactly how many people are we having?
Sophie : Well… the three of us, your parents, my sister with her husband and the two little ones, plus your brother and Clara…
Léa : That’s ten! Mom, we only have eight chairs!
Sophie : Oh no! I completely forgot… Thomas, we need to borrow chairs from the neighbors.
Thomas : Or we could put the children at a small table in the kitchen?
Léa : Dad! I’m sixteen, I’m not a child anymore!
Sophie : You’re right, sweetie. Okay, I’ll call Martine about the chairs. Thomas, are you bringing the boxes down now?
Thomas : I’m coming, I’m coming… But tell me, are we really doing all this for just three days?
Sophie : Listen, we only see the family once a year! I want everything to be perfect.
Léa : Mom, relax a little! The important thing is that we’re together, isn’t it?
Thomas : Exactly! And besides, Grandma is coming to see us, not to inspect the house!
Sophie : You might be right… But still, a bit of tidiness is nice!
Léa : Come on, we’ll do it together and it’ll be finished faster. I’ll start with my room and then I’ll help you with the dishes.
Thomas : And I’m tackling the Everest of boxes up there! But I promise, tomorrow night we’ll have a quiet movie night.
Sophie : Deal! Okay then, everyone, get to work!
Léa : By the way, Mom, have you thought about the Christmas tree?
Sophie : The tree? Oh my, I totally forgot! Thomas, we have to go buy one this afternoon!
Thomas : After the boxes AND the windows? Sophie, you’re going to kill me!
Sophie : Come on, sweetheart, it’s for Christmas! And Léa is helping us.
Léa : Yeah, besides, I can’t wait to decorate the tree! It’s going to be great!
Thomas : Okay then, but tonight-beer and the couch, that’s non-negotiable!
Sophie : Okay, okay! Come on, shall we get started? The sooner we start, the sooner it’ll be over!
