Voyageur inconnu: Merci beaucoup ! Excusez-moi… pardon… excusez-moi…
Sophie: Ouf !
Dame âgée: Excusez-moi, jeune homme, vous pourriez me laisser votre place ?
Ah ! Attention ! On freine fort !
Sophie: Bon, Thomas, on arrive bientôt.
Excuse-moi… pardon… on descend… merci !
English translation
It’s the morning rush hour, around 8:15. The No. 47 bus serving downtown is packed with workers heading to the office. In this daily crush, two colleagues, Sophie and Thomas, find themselves stuck next to each other and strike up a conversation about the difficulties of public transport during peak hours.
DIALOGUE
Sophie: Ah, Thomas! Hi! I hadn’t seen you in this… uh… moving sardine tin!
Thomas: Sophie! Well, I’ll be – we’re packed like sardines today! It’s worse than usual, isn’t it?
Sophie: You can say that again! I almost missed the bus because the line at the stop was so long. And now I can barely move a finger!
Thomas: Huh, look at that man over there… he’s reading his newspaper spread wide open! How does he manage that?
Sophie: Oh really? Where? Oh yes, I see him! He’s got space, hasn’t he! We feel like we’re in a stuck elevator…
Unknown passenger: Pardon me, I’m getting off at the next stop… Please let me through!
Thomas: Uh… we’ll try, but it’s not easy! Sophie, can you move over a bit?
Sophie: Well, I’d love to, but there’s a woman behind me with a huge backpack! Ma’am, could you maybe…
Lady with the bag: Oh, sorry! I didn’t realize! Here, I’ll move it to the front.
Thomas: Thank you, ma’am, that’s kind of you! Alright, sir, you can go now.
Unknown passenger: Thank you very much! Excuse me… pardon… excuse me…
Sophie: Phew! We’ve got a bit more room now. But tell me, Thomas, do you still take this bus? I usually take the subway.
Thomas: Oh yeah, every morning! The subway’s no better, you know. And anyway, on the bus you can at least see the scenery… well, when you manage to look out the window!
Sophie: Ah, right! Why aren’t you taking the subway today?
Thomas: Uh… well, there’s a strike on my usual line. Line 14 is closed until noon, apparently.
Sophie: Darn! So that’s why it’s so crowded then! Everyone’s switching to the buses.
Driver: Ladies and gentlemen, due to an exceptional traffic jam, we will be a few minutes late. Thank you for your understanding.
Thomas: Great! As if we weren’t already late enough… My boss is going to be mad again!
Sophie: Oh dear, me too! I have an important meeting at 9. What time do you think we’ll get there?
Thomas: Well, normally we should be at République in ten minutes, but with this traffic jam… Hmm, it’s going to be tight!
Elderly woman: Excuse me, young man, could you give me your seat? I’m not feeling very well…
Thomas: But of course, ma’am! Here, sit down. Will you be all right?
Elderly woman: Thank you, you’re very kind. It’s this heat and all these people… it’s making me dizzy.
Sophie: Would you like me to open the window, ma’am? It’s really stuffy in here!
Elderly woman: Oh yes, that would be wonderful! Thank you, my dear.
Thomas: Oh, the bus’s moving again! Finally! Sophie, by the way, how’s it going in your new department?
Sophie: Uh… well, it’s not bad, but… Ah! Watch out! We’re braking hard!
Thomas: Ouch! Sorry, ma’am, I didn’t mean to step on your foot!
Other passenger: It’s nothing, it’s nothing! These sudden stops are hell!
Sophie: So, Thomas, we’re almost there. Where exactly are you getting off?
Thomas: République, same as you! We can go the rest of the way together if you want. That’ll save us from having to catch another crowded ride!
Sophie: Good idea! At least we’ll be able to get some fresh air. Can’t wait for the holidays, right!
Thomas: Oh yes! Just three more weeks and I’ll be on a quiet beach, far from this morning rush!
Driver: République! Connections with metro lines 3, 5, 8, 9 and 11!
Sophie: Come on, it’s our stop! Excuse me… sorry… we’re getting off… thanks!
Thomas: Public transport is such a nightmare! Tomorrow I’ll get up half an hour earlier to catch a less crowded bus!
Sophie: Excellent idea! Right, let’s hurry now, we’re already fifteen minutes late!
