A conversation about cooking together as a form of spending time

Thomas: Chouette ! J’adore quand on cuisine ensemble.
Allez, on s’y met ?
Thomas: Ah zut ! Tu as raison, ça commence à fumer ! Comment on baisse déjà ?
Sophie: Ah ben tiens ! Quand ça ? Je ne t’ai pas vu !
Thomas: Pendant que tu coupais les légumes ! Je suis multitâche, moi !
Sophie: Bravo ! Bon, on dresse ? J’ai hâte de goûter notre création !
Thomas: Moi aussi ! Tu sais quoi ?

Sophie and Thomas, a couple in their thirties, get together in their kitchen in the late afternoon. They talk about what to make for dinner and decide to cook together, an activity they particularly enjoy for spending time as a couple while preparing a good meal.

DIALOGUE

Sophie: So, darling, what should we make for dinner tonight? I’d love to cook together – it’s been a while!
Thomas: Oh yes, good idea! Uh… what do we have in the fridge again?
Sophie: Let’s see… We have mushrooms, chicken, zucchini… Oh, what if we made that mushroom risotto we saw in the cookbook?
Thomas: Great! I love when we cook together. Do you remember last time? We made that gratin dauphinois… delicious!
Sophie: Oh my, yes! But this time we’re sharing the tasks properly, okay? Last time I did everything while you watched TV!
Thomas: No! I peeled all the potatoes myself! And I did the dishes afterwards…
Sophie: Alright, alright, that’s in the past. Come on, shall we get started? Can you start by washing the mushrooms?
Thomas: No problem. And you, will you take care of the rice for the risotto?
Sophie: Perfect! By the way, do we have any Parmesan?
Thomas: Uh… I think we finished it last night with the pasta. Darn!
Sophie: Oh no! Without Parmesan, the risotto won’t be great… What do we do?
Thomas: Well, maybe we can improvise? We have grated Gruyère, don’t we?
Sophie: Mmh, why not… Or hey, I’ve got another idea! What if we made a chicken and vegetable stir-fry instead? It’s simpler and we have everything we need.
Thomas: Excellent idea! And it’s quicker – I’m pretty hungry!
Sophie: Okay! So you cut the chicken into pieces, and I’ll take care of the vegetables. Shall we do it in a pan with a bit of garlic and some Herbes de Provence?
Thomas: Perfect! Uh… Sophie, do you know where the Herbes de Provence are?
Sophie: In the top cupboard, next to the salt. Thomas, be careful with the knife, okay!
Thomas: Of course I know how to cut up chicken! Ah, look, the pieces are perfect!
Sophie: Great! I’m almost done with the zucchinis. Oh, by the way, could we add some cherry tomatoes? That’ll add some color.
Thomas: Good idea! We have some in the vegetable drawer. Okay, shall I heat the pan?
Sophie: Yes, with a little olive oil. Uh, Thomas… you’ve turned the heat up a bit too high there!
Thomas: Oh darn! You’re right, it’s starting to smoke! How do we turn it down again?
Sophie: There, the left knob! That’s better. Okay, we can put the chicken in now.
Thomas: It already smells so good! I love that smell when it sizzles in the pan…
Sophie: Me too! Okay, shall I add the zucchinis? The chicken looks nicely browned.
Thomas: Go ahead! I’ll prepare the garlic. Hey, shall we add some white wine? I opened a bottle yesterday.
Sophie: Excellent idea! It’ll give everything a lovely aroma. You’re only putting in a small glass, right?
Thomas: Of course! There you go… Mmm, it smells divine now!
Sophie: That’s true! Okay, I’ll add the cherry tomatoes and the herbs. Can you taste it for salt and pepper?
Thomas: With pleasure! Mmm… perfect! Maybe just a pinch more pepper.
Sophie: There you go! I think it’s ready. What should we serve it with? Rice, pasta?
Thomas: Rice will be just fine. I cooked some while we were cooking.
Sophie: Oh, hey! Since when? I didn’t see you!
Thomas: While you were chopping the vegetables! I’m multitasking!
Sophie: Bravo! Okay, shall we plate it? I can’t wait to taste our creation!
Thomas: Me too! You know what? We should cook together more often. It’s really fun!
Sophie: I totally agree! Besides, we make a great team. Come on, let’s eat!
