Clara: Thomas ? Notre Thomas ? Mais qu’est-ce qu’il a bien pu dire ?
Sophie: Euh… ben, tu te souviens, j’avais mis ma nouvelle robe rouge ?
Clara: Il a dit ça ?!
Clara: Tu as complètement raison.
Sophie: Mmh… Peut-être. Mais bon, le mal est fait. Je me sens tellement gênée maintenant !
Sophie: Tu as raison…
Sophie: D’accord… Bon, ça va être parti !
English translation
The situation takes place the day after a birthday party at the home of mutual friends. Sophie meets her best friend Clara in a café to talk about a hurtful comment that Thomas, a friend from the group, made to Sophie in front of everyone during the party. Sophie is still upset by the remark about her appearance and wonders how to react.
DIALOGUE
Sophie: Clara, I’m so glad you could come… I really needed to talk to you after last night.
Clara: Of course, my dear! On the phone you sounded really shaken. What exactly happened? You left the party so early…
Sophie: It’s Thomas… He said something that really hurt me. In front of everyone, too.
Clara: Thomas? Our Thomas? But what on earth could he have said?
Sophie: Uh… well, do you remember, I was wearing my new red dress? The one I bought especially for the occasion?
Clara: Yes, it looked great on you! You looked stunning!
Sophie: Exactly… When I got close to the group, Thomas looked me up and down and said, “Well, Sophie, have you put on weight? This dress is a bit tight on you, don’t you think?”
Clara: He said that?! What an idiot! I’m sorry, but that’s really out of line!
Sophie: And the worst part is that everyone heard. There was an awkward silence, then people changed the subject… I was mortified.
Clara: Oh, my poor darling… And what did you reply?
Sophie: Nothing at all! I was so shocked that I just stood there like an idiot. Afterwards, I slipped away quietly.
Clara: But Thomas isn’t usually mean… Maybe he had a bit too much to drink?
Sophie: Huh? You’re defending him now?
Clara: No, no! Not at all! What he said is inexcusable, but… well, you know him, sometimes he says stupid things without thinking.
Sophie: Clara, you don’t understand… I’ve been insecure about my weight for months. I gained a few kilos since my breakup with Julien, and I’m doing everything I can to lose them.
Clara: But Sophie, you’re perfectly fine just the way you are! And besides, a few kilos are nothing at all!
Sophie: That’s not the point! The problem is that he had no right to make that comment, especially in front of everyone!
Clara: You’re absolutely right. That was really insensitive of him. But tell me, what are you going to do now?
Sophie: Well, that’s the thing, I don’t know… Should I say something to him? Pretend nothing happened? Should I avoid going out with the group?
Clara: Oh no! You’re not going to isolate yourself over his blunder!
Sophie: But Clara, I don’t want to see him anymore… And what do the others think now?
Clara: Listen, the others don’t care at all! And they probably thought Thomas was out of line too.
Sophie: Do you think so? Nobody messaged me afterwards…
Clara: Maybe they didn’t know what to say? Or maybe they didn’t realize how much it had upset you.
Sophie: Mmh… Maybe. But oh well, the damage is done. I feel so embarrassed now!
Clara: Sophie, you have to talk to him! You can’t just let that go.
Sophie: Talk to him? Tell him what? “Hi Thomas, your comments about my appearance hurt me”?
Clara: Why not? At least he’ll understand that his words have consequences!
Sophie: Yes but… what if he makes fun of me? What if he tells me I’m too sensitive?
Clara: In that case, you’ll know he’s not a real friend! Someone who won’t admit his mistakes…
Sophie: You’re right… But I’m afraid I’ll make myself look even more ridiculous.
Clara: Listen, do you want me to talk to him first? To test the waters?
Sophie: No! Definitely not! I don’t want to look like a tattletale!
Clara: So be brave, sweetheart! Call him or send him a message. Just tell him that his comment hurt you.
Sophie: And what if he doesn’t answer?
Clara: At least you’ll have said what was on your mind. And who knows? He might regret it and apologize.
Sophie: Okay… I’ll try texting him. But if it goes badly, you’re taking me out to dinner to cheer me up!
Clara: Deal! And you, Sophie? You’re perfect just the way you are – never forget it.
Sophie: Thank you, Clara… What would I do without you?
Clara: Come on, write him that message now! I’m staying with you to give you courage!
Sophie: Okay… Right, here goes!
